Freezing

Hello all,

I am from lebanon and I am new to utorrent and my pc freezes randomly when using it, if i am surfing the net or just watching videos no problem, it only starts freezing randomly if I start utorrent ( with bittorrent exactly same problem), I tried formatting the pc but the problem is still the same, it could freeze after 5 min, 5 hours... no specific time

my pc is intel core 2 duo 2.4Ghz

2GB ram

Intel DG31PR motheboard

no VGA cards installed

windows XP with SP2

i have a wireless connection, with a USB IPwireless/ Nextwave P1D modem with a 512 connection however i tested it with utorrent and it said 212 download, 43 upload, my torrents would run between 2-50 kbps download.

I have AVG free antivirus and Ad-aware, windows firewall has utorrent as an exception, i have seen many posting a hijack this file so here is mine

Does AVG filter/inspect internet packets? I'd try adding uTorrent to the worm radar or realtime scanning exception list in AVG.

I see you already have DNA running in the background. Does it freeze the computer similarly when you're downloading using that?

AVG uses a resident shield, i added the utorrent path to the exception path, will see what happens, also the DNA appeared on my pc when I first downloaded bittorent, do i need to remove it? i do not know what it does !

Here's some information on DNA http://www.bittorrent.com/dna/whatisdna/ Both the DNA client and bittorrent client from http://bittorrent.com are modified uTorrent clients with the addition of certain features relevant for the content they carry. I don't think DNA comes preinstalled with anything, and if you've never seen the links similar to the ones you see linked on the webpages there, you can uninstall it. I'm not sure if you can remove it from the dna.cpl control panel extension but I'm sure it will be in Add/Remove programs.

I'm hopeful that scanner was the problem

EDIT: IMPORTANT: Your Speed Guide settings (Ctrl-G) don't look like they can be set much higher than xx/64 especially since you're connected over USB to your ISP.

ok so i removed DNA and i did the settings for the speed as well, will that still affect the download speed that I have though the max that it ever reaches is 50 kbps?

Nope. 512 Kbit down is theoretical max of 64. You're only getting 80% of that. On such a low upload bandwidth you should also check out http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992 and turn off the functions it mentions and maybe even lower the presets for xx/64 even more.

It depends on the types of swarms you're usually connected to for your download speed.. if it's usually really popular content then you shouldn't have any problems. On smaller swarms, you may notice a slowdown in the time it takes to get connected but download speed shouldn't change, no.

was watching a youtube video and dowloading one torrent at xx/64 with a speed of 13-14kbps !

but this the first time it freezes after i modified it, usually would have at least 4 to 5 freezes by now,

any ideas?

OK, that cements in my mind. I think you need to look for updated/better drivers for your USB dongle from the device or computer manufacturer to connect to the wireless... that or connect using regular Cat 5(e)-6 cabling. :/ Unfortunately most USB drivers for things don't work too well with high bandwidth applications like bittorrent or filesharing. Years ago I was even able to freeze a computer when pumping out full USB 2.0 throughput.

was just trying a bit with the speed setting while downloading a torrent, it was on xx/64, it was about 29kbps then i put it on xxx/512 just to see what happens, the download speed went up to 80kbps and the pc frooooooooooze !
