Ultima
Crap, I misread your post earlier amd missed the fact that you said the drive was off... Because of that, the answer is simple: µTorrent doesn't know what happened to the files after they mysteriously disappear, so it assumes the files were deleted. When you turn the drive on and resume, µTorrent thinks you got the files from an external source, and as such, rechecks to make sure the files are valid. There basically is no way to prevent this other than to remember to turn your drive on, or to get something to remind you to turn it on before running µTorrent. A way to prevent the recheck has been requested before.
mpqo
An option should be added to uTorrent (on advanced tab perhaps?) like "I'm using external Drive" or an option like this but per torrent so it will ask you on startup something like "Please turn on the external source and then click OK"
thelittlefire
Or don't leave torrents started which you have on an external drive... so you'd only have to recheck the FIRST torrent you try to start... if the drive is not ON when uTorrent starts up.
