SecretMaster
Hello. I've run into a problem with uTorrent that I can't figure out. I'll start up uTorrent as I normally do, downloading things, then go about my business (surfing the web, for instance). Everything gets slow, and I don't exactly mean internet connection. The mouse...becomes...sketchy... It moves in stutters and stops. I have to be very gentle when I want to do something in response (usually right-clicking on the uTorrent icon in the system tray to turn it off) because my hand movements may translate into a lot of movement when the mouse jerks around. This also happens with hotkeys, such as Alt+Tab or Alt+F4. Sometimes the keyboard registers, sometimes not. I don't know if you've ever had your CPU usage spike to 100% for prolonged periods of time, and sometimes everything gets herky-jerky. This is exactly like that (until recently had a rather primitive CPU that did this, now I'm running quad-core and it still happens...but with uTorrent!). What is causing this? If I were to open uTorrent, then immediately Stop all downloads/uploads, this doesn't happen. If I open uTorrent and Pause all downloads/uploads, it still happens. And, if I have uTorrent running for a while, then stop all downloads (assuming the jerking isn't so bad and I can do this) it still happens. What's going on with this? Even one download will do this.Okay, then there's another problem. Let's say I've been running uTorrent for a long time, or even a few minutes. Some uninterrupted moment of time, uTorrent is running. I Stop all uTorrent downloads. Maybe even I exit uTorrent and it's not even in the system any more. Doesn't matter; this happens. My browser won't work. I'm using Firefox, and any link I open, mail I open (from Gmail), page I reload, search for on Google... I get a network time out. Every time! I can step away for a few minutes, and it still won't get me anywhere when I come back. And uTorrent's closed, remember. But, if I close Firefox, then count to 15 or so, and re-open the browser, everything works again. Now. If I have to close Firefox to surf because uTorrent is using all the bandwidth, that's fine and understandable. But, why would Firefox not be able to get anything until I close and restart?Incidentally, I'm running unlimited downloads and uploads on uTorrent. Notice I'm not wondering why I can't surf while uTorrent's active so much as I'm wondering why the jerky-jerky stuff's going on, AND why I have to restart my browser. Please educate me!Thank you! Firon
Post a HijackThis log please. Also, it sounds like your hard drive has lapsed into PIO mode. Uninstall all your IDE and SATA controllers in the Device Manager and reboot.
SecretMaster
Could you tell me what HijackThis is? Is this a snapshot log of what my computer is doing/running?Let me know, I'm heading out now, but will get back to this tonight.
Firon
It's a program that gives us a log of processes, services and certain other useful information to help us know if there's something problematic installed on your system. thelittlefire
Instructions are at the bottom of http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992You know when my computer started crawling... and @ 100%, when my disk was nearly full but the driver (3rd party EXT filesystem driver) didn't know how to say ERROR; and stop the data from downloading. I've also seen cases where your pagefile/RAM/cache gets used up and when things start swapping you get INSANE lag.

Firon
Remove the AVG Firewall.
SecretMaster
Really? Isn't it important to have a firewall?
thelittlefire
If you're behind a router, the appreciable gain from a software firewall is limited.
SecretMaster
Am I behind a router? I never considered the cable modem supplied by my local cable company was one. That's pretty cool.
thelittlefire
Generally speaking they aren't. Though some are.. big indicator is if there's more than 1 output port. Also wireless ANYTHING has routing capability, otherwise it's just called an access point If you see anything 10.x.x.x 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x in the start > run > cmd /k tracert forum.utorrent.com it's likely you do. nik3k
I had this problem, laggy mouse and firefox not loading pages while uTorrent was running. I've been browsing the forum and found that simply adding utorrent.exe to my NOD32 exceptions list solved both problems thus far!
SecretMaster
nik3k: Can you please tell me what this is about? I'm interested in finding a solution. I've also taken the advice of thelittlefire and disabled my AVG firewall. Problem seems to continue, but not, I think, to as great an extent. Note, though, that I only just now disabled it, then started uTorrent, so my impressions are on the first glance. I'll give it a day to test it.I'm finding, though, that the problem may be deeper. This sketchy, laggy mouse also happens when I load up a website, regardless of whether uTorrent is active or not. I'm wondering if this is a deeper problem, wondering if it's Firefox, Vista, hardware, or something else, or a combination of any number of things. Don't know where to go next, though, if that's the problem.
Firon
Did you actually try what I said to do in my first reply?
SecretMaster
Firon: In looking back, I notice you did say more than just post a HijackThis log. That's my fault I didn't follow through on your whole suggestion. I have uninstalled my ATA and IDE controllers in Device Manager by expanding the device heading IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and uninstalling each one. I then rebooted. A strange thing happened when I reopened uTorrent. All my torrent downloads and uploads have disappeared. The files themselves are still there, but the record of them in uTorrent are gone. If there's a way to retrieve them, that'd be great. If not, I consider is a small price to pay for fixing everything. As for whether this fixed the problem, it's too early to tell now. I'm going to have to go out and start downloading stuff right now. I'll get back to you when I have a few things going. Also, thanks to everyone for putting your brainpower behind this. On the same day I posted this question I posted a question on an unrelated issue in a Vista forum and have yet to get one reply. You guys are great! thelittlefire
Unfortunately, it sounds like your list is gone and dead. If you open your %APPDATA% directory, do you see any resume.*.bad files? http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Where_are_the_settings_and_.torrent_files_stored.3FIf the only size of resume.*(usually .dat and .dat.old) are < 1 KiB then you must re-add everything. I would suggest turning off the two show dialog boxes and/or using auto-load so you don't get prompted and uT finds the data automatically. Firon
The resume data getting trashed probably happened when Windows killed utorrent's process while shutting down.
SecretMaster
At around 6 PM Pacific everything looked good. I was downloading at 750+ kB/s. There're no stutters or stops for the mouse or keyboard. That was with four downloads going, so I added more. After adding 10 more downloads, I went out for the night, figuring a true test would be when I came back. See, I lock my computer when I leave. Before, when I came back, it took forever to log back in, so slow was the mouse, and the keyboard didn't always register my password. It would take several minutes before I could turn off uTorrent, then wait about ten minutes before I could load anything on the browser. And even then, when loading new content, the whole computer would get jiggedy. Now, coming home, I find everything works great! I hate to get my hopes up, but I think it's been fixed. I'll monitor for the next few days and see if it relapses. But, if this is the fix, what happened?AND if it's the fix, THANKS!
thelittlefire
Well it could be an HTTP monitor which was the problem (I don't use any of the software firewalls so I wouldn't know where to look)... sometimes firewalls inspect ALL DATA for "malicious behaviour". . .bad idea for p2p applications, heh
Switeck
I didn't catch exactly what settings you're using in uTorrent...but they're probably too much for your connection or at least slightly unfair to other peers and seeds. If you happen to be using a half open connection limit greater than 8, that alone can totally explain your problems.uTorrent v1.8 has a serious problem with its half open connection limit handling, even at 8.The latest v1.8.1 beta should have that cleared up, so try it.
