javz3
I've been always a utorrent user and I've sopped upgrading after version 1.6.1, however since I've purchased a new computer I had to upgrade to the latest one. First of all everytime I exit uTorrent, it always freezes, I mean it ALWAYS freezes. My previous computer was an Intel Pentium 4 XP and now its an AMD Quad Core Vista. Even as I am typing right now, it is still frozen and it also either delays or prevents my computer to be turned off as I have to turn it off manually after waiting 5-10mins.Also I have seen a dramatic download decrease, usually I use to download at 250kbs-1.3mbs, but now its like 0-50kbs and another problem, well for me, is that everytime i turn uTorrent on it checks the files that I am downloading which takes forever. Please help.Thank You
DreadWingKnight
Do you have zonealarm installed?
thelittlefire
Lol, two things. First welcome to the new 1.8 version. Second, I don't understand "have to upgrade"... :/What version are you using (Alt-H-A)? What software are you using... if it's Zone Alarm, please get rid of it, and never install it again. Also there are some patching software for multi-core processors, so search and check them out. Also you can check Process Explorer to see what's holding things up.. if uTorrent.exe is being used by anything else.
javz3
On my old PC I had ZA, but it wasnt a problem, I doubt it is the problem.I've used (in oreder) 1.8 > 1.8.1 > 1.7.7 > 1.8.1And by the way, utorrent is still frozen! And I am trying to end process but it still wont shut down, however it is still downloading as my router is still flashing (meaning that it is still downloading)
Firon
You need to uninstall ZA. It is the problem, and it's been verified by a lot of users. It's a problem that only exists on Vista, and is unfortunately a nasty bug in ZA, as it holds processes hostage in the kernel. It will in fact even prevent you from rebooting. You have to power the machine off by holding the power button. On XP, ZA provides other annoyances (like TrueVector crashing the entire system), but it doesn't cause the shutdown problem. thelittlefire
Uninstall it. Just humour us.
javz3
Well I've actually went back to uTorrent version 1.6.1, I thought it wont work on Vista anymore but IT WORKS!!!!!Having this now, I have no problem wahtoever, even with ZA on!Thanks guys, I'll post back if something goes wrong. thelittlefire
Downgrading doesn't solve a problem, if there is one with uTorrent. And 1.6.1 is old, deprecated, and exploitable... you really shouldn't be using it.
javz3
What are the bad things about uTorret 1.6.1?Also IF I wanted to use the updated versions, and IF I uninstall ZA, what would be a good firewall to use which is compatible for uTorrent?ThanksEDIT: Is peer guardian any good?
moogly
Kerio, NOD32, etc...edit: dont use peer guardian, an ipfilter.dat in uT is enough. and this software slows p2p.
thelittlefire
PeerGuardian isn't a firewall, and the default lists from bluetack garner much ridicule here. The only blocklist you need is one you make yourself after research...and can easily be used in uTorrent without some external program possibly killing the connection prematurely. http://utorrent.com/faq.php#What_is_ipfilter.dat.3FSearching, Comodo comes up as a nice free firewall, if you don't like Windows Firewall. In all honesty you don't need a software firewall when you're behind a router (unless it's in a distributed LAN environment like a campus where the LAN is as large a network as the internet you're NATted from)...Bad things about old versions--didn't I say? Well, noone else will help you here on an old version, aside to tell you to read the stickies (which you should have already read anyways), there are exploits out in the wild, and known vulnerabilities about all versions of uTorrent prior to 1.8. If you are not upgrading due to tracker limitations (which is highly stupid if they allow deprecated 18 month old version and not allowing the version released just shy of 2 months ago)Release schedule for major versions:--- 2008-10-02: Version 1.8.1 RC1 (build 12549)--- 2008-08-13: Version 1.8 (build 11813)--- 2008-01-25: Version 1.7.7 (build 8179)--- 2008-01-15: Version 1.7.6 (build 7859)--- 2007-09-11: Version 1.7.5 (build 4602)--- 2007-02-13: Version 1.6.1 (build 490)Also, you want to fix the rechecking, uninstall zone alarm.. it keeps uTorrent from quitting cleanly. AND in the cases where you do need to recheck data from a previous session, there is much less checking on 1.8. One thing to do, if you pre-allocate use 1.8.1 not 1.8, there's a problem with diskio.sparse_files and pre-allocate. Other questions?
DreadWingKnight
What are the bad things about uTorret 1.6.1?Security holes.
javz3
You sound very convincing. Also I checked up on Comodo, but I heard its a "forgetful" software since it keeps repeating things that you only do once in ZA. However, my uTorrent no froze again so I might get the latest one and try to uninstall ZA if there is something better or equal to it.Also what about BitTorrent? or BitComet? Do they have much problems like uTorrent for Vista? Thanks again, you guys really are helpful
DreadWingKnight
Bitcomet has other problems, like protocol implementation bugs and the fact that it spies on its users (wireshark'd)
javz3
WOAH!!! uTorrent (1.8) is working perfectly after uninstalling ZA.....now I'm looking for a firewallAny ideas?
GTHK
A router works well as it's a hardware firewall, if you want a software firewall (and something not Microsoft), try Comodo Firewall Pro. Instructions for configuring with µTorrent: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=292343#p292343If you're certain your computer is clean and don't want to deal with the initial warnings you can set it to training mode and it'll auto-accept things till you set it back to normal or some other mode. javz3
THANKS ALOT DUDE!!!!Also what do they mean by YOUR PORT? Even though they say the one uTorrent listens on, what if I change the port?
GTHK
You change it in CFP to match then, should be able to do this inside the firewall
javz3
CFP?EDIT: Dont worry and thanks
Switeck
Try my speed guide for uTorrent at:http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=34259You can probably set alternate upload speed a little higher than regular upload speed max...it'll let you get your ratios back and share to others faster that way. moogly
About your firewall, look at this page about free firewalls. Sorry it's in French but look at the ranking after testing (recent survey in Sept. 2008):http://www.generation-nt.com/comparatif-test-firewall-pare-feu-parefeu-gratuit-comodo-prosecurity-sunbelt-zonealarm-onlinearmor-article-91881-9.html1. toolbox
This makes me wonder what exactly changed between 1.8 and 1.8.1 that started tripping off Zone Alarm?I was also very happy with 1.8 - no freezes, 100% stability - but as soon as I upgraded to 1.8.1 I started getting the freeze on exit, which happened on the kernel level since I could not end the process even with ProcessExplorer. From this thread, I found out that it's ZoneAlarm that's causing the freeze.Maybe the devs should investigate what actually changed between 1.8 and 1.8.1 that now trips off Zone Alarm. I'd bet at least 70% of all users with SW firewalls use ZA and rather than telling them all to uninstall it and get something else the devs should make a fix in the next version (even if this fix is a crude patch) to overcome the problem.Just my 2 cents.-AnotherDeveloper
DreadWingKnight
Among other things, zonealarm treats different versions of the same program as different programs.
