HELP, please. I am at a loss !!

uTorrent used to work fine, but i am now having problems with speed, portforwarding and god knows what else

Let me start by saying that i DID READ the stickied threads re: speed but, alas, i did not find an answer to my problems, hence this post.

I use uTorrent 1.8.1 and Windows Vista. My ISP is Sympatico (Bell Canada). The router is 2WIRE 2701 HG-G. It is connected to my wife's desktop computer and my own laptop uses Sympatico's home wireless network to access the Web. My firewall is Norton Internet Security 2008.

Now, my problem is this. Many times in the past, I would top 100 kB/s when i downloaded, but speed has slowed down suddenly and considerably a few weeks ago. Nowadays i am often around 0,2 kB/s and will only top 10 kB/s on rare occasions (and that never lasts) !!! Since i did not know what was the cause of this loss of speed, i searched for a solution to fix the problem and in the process read a lot on BitTorrent and ports and this and that, but i am afraid that i only made things worse, partly because a lot of the advices and tips that i gathered seemed to contradict themselves.

In any case, as it stands now, each time i click on "Test if port is forwarded properly" (in uTorrent's SpeedGuide), i get the same message :

Welcome to the µTorrent Port Checker.

A test will be performed on your computer to check if the specified port is opened.

Checking port XXXXX on 76.67.24.47...

Error! Port XXXXX does not appear to be open.

Please see www.portforward.com for more information about how to map a port.

Please make absolutely sure that PeerGuardian2 or Protowall is allowing utorrent.com (72.20.34.145) in either of those programs. Those of you using ipfilter.dat should make sure the list does not include the website's IP. After making sure of this, re-run this test by refreshing the page (F5).

Now, i did go to www.portforward.com, selected my router among the list and did exactly as they say. Nothing works. I have tried several ports (some chosen by uTorrents, other i picked myself) but to no avail. I am at a loss because i remember that the first time i followed Portforward.com's instructions, it had worked.

I have got no downloads as i am currently typing this, and no one is downloading from me either, but i do see a question mark in a red circle at the bottom of uTorrent's window, which says : "Listen error - You should change the listen port". (What the Hell does that mean?)

I want to add two more things : 1) my Norton firewall has been set to accept uTorrent; 2) i uninstalled uTorrent and installed it again a couple of times, but it did not produce any result.

Can anybody help me ? How come it used to work fine

Do i need to install uTorrent on the desktop computer (connected to the router) or is it only my laptop that matters ?

Why is uTorrent always telling me that the port i use "does not appear to be open" ?

What is my IP address : 76.67.24.47 or 192.168.X.X ? And what's the other, if not the IP address ?

Does anybody here know what is going on ?!

I find this very frustrating. I am abig comuputer guy and english is not my first language, and that only adds to my annoyance.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

That means something else is using the liusten port.

If your DSL modem (provided by bell) is listed on the portforward router list, you need to either port forward with it or run one of the two routers in bridging mode.

Thank you very muich for replying.

As i have mentionned in my previous post, i did try to portforward it, and more than once. I made sure that i followed the instructions closely. But it does not work.

I have tried doing it with several different port numbers (which i randomly picked), all of them 16881 and 50000, but it never made a difference.

As for the second part of your answer, i am sorry, but i don't understand what you mean by runninng one in bridging mode.

Any other good samaritain out here ?

Thanks in advance.
