niktarace Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hi.I got a pbm with the forced re-check.My issue appears when I download multi-file torrents and a part is labelled as "Ignore".When the non-ignored files of the torrent are 100% complete, I stop the torrent, remove it, reload it (then automatically force a re-check).Anyway the forced re-check doesn't say 100% for complete files I previously downloaded, but 99% or 98.5% (variable value, depends on the torrent): some pieces are missing and uT must redownload these missing pieces to complete files a 2nd time.In fact my files are virtually seen uncomplete after the forced re-check but physically complete because I can use them (no CRC errors are visible).OS file indexation is disabled on my computer. My all different HD work fine, no hardware issues.Similar problem if I download a multi-file torrent on my external HD or USB device with various cluster sizes.Same problem with uT 1.7.7 then 1.8 series.OS: WinXP SP3FW: Kerio 4.2.3AV: noneuT: 1.8.0Thx for helping me with this constant issue...Bye.EDIT: I wanted to precise that this issue appears when I remove the multi-file torrent from the uT window (just simple remove without deleting .torrent & data) and I reload it from %appdata% folder. uT does a forced re-check and finds "uncomplete" complete files.
Ultima Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Forced recheck throws incomplete pieces out -- that includes edge pieces where data is missing. Do you still have partfiles in the directory?
thelittlefire Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Your problem looks similar to http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=46341 . thelittlefire Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 To expand on Ultima's point above, IF you go to the Files tab, after a recheck is the ONLY part red (aka missing) at the end of the file(s) where you skipped the next file? You may need to turn on "First Piece" column and sort by that to be sure of the file order. Also you are running 1.8, not 1.8.1 so you may want to upgrade. And you have seem.dll Speed Network Monitor Al © 2003 1.00.0000.0001injected, though I'm not sure why/how/if it is causing memory/file corruption.Could you check both and update the thread.
niktarace Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 For seem.dll I saw it after I posted the PE log here and I thought it could be the source of my issue.Anyway I removed it and rebooted my PC, but forced re-check continues to fail when I reload a multi-file torrent.seem.dll doesn't seem to be the cause of that. :/Yep, about Ultima's question, the missing pieces after a forced re-check are at the end of the complete files. So for small files (e.g. a pic of 50kB if the piece size is higher), the re-check says 0%.
thelittlefire Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Well if you are rechecking incomplete pieces are lost (anything shown in Pieces tab). If the ONLY red parts are at the end those files, be sure you see ut-XXXXX-partfile.dat in the same directory as your downloaded data (General tab, Save As). That's the most likely explanation. You didn't touch Ctrl-P > Advanced > use_partfile ?
niktarace Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 I didn't know this rule about re-check & incomplete pieces in uT.For partfile.dat files, I'm sure they are in data folder. So I tried your procedure: when I removed a multi-file torrent (with ignored files) from uT, the partfile has been deleted in the data folder. I reloaded the .torrent from %appdata% and after the automatic forced re-check, uT said my files supposed as complete were uncomplete with missing pieces at each end.In Settings > Advanced > diskio.use_partfile is TRUE (value by default I mean).Anyway if I understand your explanations what I suspected as an issue is... the REAL behavior of uT and not an issue i.e. uT discarded incomplete pieces during a forced re-check!!! But this behavior can be a problem for users no ?Imagine this story:A leecher downloads a part of a multi-file torrent. He simply removes this torrent from uT.One year later the torrent has NO seeds but the guy decides to reseed because there are leechers blocked at 0%.He reloads the torrent but uT says the end pieces of complete files are missing but that's not the case physically on his DD.So he can't well seed the complete files that he already has... :/
thelittlefire Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Yep. That's why selective downloading isn't good :/
niktarace Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 So it's a behavior of uT (and maybe of all clients reliable with the standard protocol) that's not optimal but the best by default for selective downloading.Anyway do you know if diskio.use_partfile = FALSE can change something in this behavior ? Or is it completely different ?Thx for help.
Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Setting it to false creates the skipped files and writes your partial data into them. They will persist across a recheck, but they will also consume more disk space.
BlueDragon Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 An old thread but still needs some information complement...Imagine this story:A leecher downloads a part of a multi-file torrent. He simply removes this torrent from uT.One year later the torrent has NO seeds but the guy decides to reseed because there are leechers blocked at 0%.He reloads the torrent but uT says the end pieces of complete files are missing but that's not the case physically on his DD.So he can't well seed the complete files that he already has... hmmThere is one way to get round this stupid (sorry) behavior of uT:Before to delete the torrent (e.g. remove it from the torrent job list) just backup the full data with the ~uTorrentPartFile_XXXXXXXXX.dat containing the part of the edge pieces which were not used to build up the data of the selected files.Later when you want to seed again or say download some files sharing the piece(s) information which was put in the partfile, thus reducing the redundant data you'd otherwise would have to download again, follow these steps:1) Reload the .torrent metainfo (File-->add torrent...)2) Simply put back all the backuped files (incl. the partfile) in the needed download directory (recreate the same directory structure than you had before the backup if you want to avoid problems at this level).3) Go to the files tab of uT and the easiest is to first select all the files (ctrl-A) and then right click and select don't download.4) After that right click on the newly reloaded torrent in the job list and select force re-check. As a result you should see more and more blue pieces appear in the files tab or in the general tab. Wait for the re-check to be completed (it may take a while according to the amount of data hashs which will have to be compared to the hashs in the .torrent file)5) Select all the files which you downloaded before e.g. the ones with a full blue piece line and right click with normal priority (or whatever you want). Now you should be able to seed what you selectively downloaded previously by starting the job. NB: If you additionaly want to select new files to download it will work as usual. uT will immediately create them e.g. reserve the space with the .!ut extension if this option is set.NB2: Be aware that if you want to avoid the torrentpartfile information to be deleted by a forced re-check following any manual change in the content of any file in the download location, dont' forget to select to skip all the files for downloading prior to re-check. A backup is a must anyway !
Ultima Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 There is one way to get round this stupid (sorry) behavior of uT:How is it stupid to clean up after yourself? The partfile is *temporary* for the span of time that the torrent is in the list. If you remove it prematurely, then that's your problem. I don't see why µTorrent should keep around data for files you've told it to skip after you've removed the torrent -- which is the same as saying "I'm done with this torrent, it's no longer in your hands". The partfile is for µTorrent to keep track of unwanted data in edge pieces, so keeping the partfile around would imply that the torrent is still in µTorrent's hands.
BlueDragon Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I knew my statement would be somewhat provocative and I am glad you pointed it out Ultima, so I may express my opinion about it. I fully understand your arguments and it's a point of view I can undersand too. Nevertheless it's a default behaviour of uT which will always again lead to some bad surprises for many users. You may argue that after all it's only concerning edge pieces at the most but I can argue back that in certain situations there may be quite a lot of 2 or 4 MB edge pieces which will unknowingly be sent to the electronic Nirwana just because one told uT to simply remove the torrent from the job list without wanting any data to be deleted !! I know there might be different logical or even illogical thinkings and you may define mine as being dragonly illogical but I will pretend that I'm by far not the only one having it... Please let me explain you clearly why: If I see uT offering 3 levels of removal: A) Delete .torrent Delete .torrent + Data C) Delete Data than sorry but I don't expect uT to remove ANY data if I use (A) and these partfiles are what? Plain Data! You might consider it as only edge pieces useless data (because you are an uT Guru but not all out there are) but data it is and data it remains, especially if you just want to unclutter somewhat your job list which has grown out of any controlable limit. You might not imagine how many hours I've been moving and copying data around all my physical and logical drives because I had reached a point where it was making me sick and mad to have to search and scroll for min and hours to come to the needed information within the hundreds torrents I had in my job list. Especially because besides some labels I can self-define there's virtually no way to sort out the information (of course besides sorting and resorting the various columns again and again according to the best way to find what I'm searching). Oh yes of course it depends also from you monitor screen size, good if you have 21" but I don't... Sometimes I wonder how actively people do really manage their torrents and I am not surprised anymore when I see connections with 0.1 KB/s speed since you have to be very good or have a plenty of time at your disposal if you want to manage hundreds of loaded torrents in an efficient way (using your full bandwith at any time without having all used by 2 connections or the opposite as I just pointed out). Anyway I think this topic might be off thread... Let me just finish this by adding that at least a way of color marking (highlighting) the torrents in the job list would be a must to implement in future versions. Also a seeding priority list etc.. Or an optional separated window / tab for seeding / stopped / downloading jobs...[EDIT] And I forgot to add another stupid (oh maybe I should say illogical or logical...) uT implementation: Deleting the partfile data when one reloads or force re-check with all the needed data left in the download location... [/EDIT]
