Voxx Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 First off, I'd just like to say I am not new to this. I've been using Utorrent for years now, and have never had a single problem forwarding the ports. I have also done it for countless other people and applications. Utorrent is throwing me for a loop right now, though. As far as I can tell, it looks like everything is setup ok. Utorrent was working for for a long time on this computer, and then all of a sudden... it just wouldn't forward a port. I've tried multiple ports.. I've even tried skipping the router completely and going straight to the modem. Nothing seems to be working. I have Windows Firewall turned off, I have never installed any other form of Anti-Virus, or Firewall protection. I am not running Peer Guardian or any traffic blocker of any kind. I even tried un/reinstalling UTorrent.Any ideas?
Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Connect to the modem again and try turning the Windows firewall back on, just for the hell of it.Also, if you're on XP, try running Winsock XP Fix.
Voxx Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 I'm on Vista, and I tried the modem trick, no work.
Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Can you post a HijackThis log?I see that you have an NVIDIA chipset. By default, the platform drivers install the NVIDIA firewall (network access manager, forceware access manager, lots of names for it).

Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 You're running 1.8.1, right? 1.8 has a few problems on Vista.Just to note, have you actually tried using the port tester in the speed guide?Have you tried running ut as admin?
Voxx Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 I am running 1.8.1, I always use the Speed Guide tester. Just tried running as admin, and no luck. Is there a way to see if my router is letting any ports forward at all, or if it is just UTorrent being silly?
Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Okay, connect your PC directly to the modem again. Then check ipconfig and paste the output here.
Firon Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Okay, that means your modem isn't also a router...And if you run a speed test right now, it tells you the port is closed?Just for the sake of testing, can you re-enable the Windows Firewall and restart utorrent? Make sure "add windows firewall exception" is checked in Connection.
Voxx Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 Ran the port test, says the port is blocked. Started up Windows Firewall, even added the port I am using to the exceptions list. Firewall Exception is indeed checked, and I restarted UTorrent. Ran the speed test and it is still saying the port is closed. I'm no expert...but doesn't this seem to be defying all logic?
Firon Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 That is just bizarre.Okay, get TCPView and try to monitor what happens when µTorrent tries to listen for a connection on the port you set.
Voxx Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 Alright, this is now treading into unfamiliar waters for me. Firon Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Do you have the alternate port set in the WebUI config?
Ultima Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Wow. That's crazy -- this is indeed almost logic-defying >_>Try running µTorrent with a clean slate. Meaning... Start > Run > %appdata%\uTorrentExit µTorrent, backup settings.dat somewhere else (not with the executable), then delete settings.dat and settings.dat.old. Re-run µTorrent and reconfigure the port settings and see if the problem persists.Edit: As well, what does the tooltip for the network status icon say? Is there any error in the Logger tab? (Make sure you have verbose and error logging enabled -- you can skip peer communication logger messages).
Voxx Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 I was going to use a Sidebar addon for Utorrent, but decided not to. Now that I think about it..that is around when everything went haywire.I reinstalled, but maybe it saved the settings, I'll try it with a clean slate.
Ultima Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 FYI, the alternative listening port is still binding as long as that checkbox is checked, even though it's grayed (it's definitely a usability problem). Backup the current settings.dat for us to take a look at anyway, enable WebUI, and uncheck the alternative listening port.
Voxx Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 That did it.... dayum. Thanks a ton guys.
Ultima Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Which suggestion? XDDo you still have a copy of the odd settings.dat for us to see? Maybe it's some weird corruption that can be reproduced/fixed by the devs?
Voxx Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 Deleting the settings.dat and re-setting it up...now I need to reconnect through my modem and make 100% sure.Yea I do, let me post em real quick/
Firon Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 This might explain why several other people have this same exact issue for no obvious reason...Definitely a bug that needs to be fixed.
