Coriolanus Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Do MMOs interfere with Torrend Downloads by using bandwith for their data? How about when your playing them with the concomittant transfer of data between host and server and also when you are downloading updates? What about other downloads - do they cut into Torrents?
thelittlefire Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Your ISP only gives you so much bandwidth, aka your pipe. Similar to your bathroom pipes which... don't run well when clogged, your internet can get the same "clogged" feeling if you're doing alot on it.The act of playing a MMO doesn't "interfere" the same way the torrenting doesn't "interfere" with MMO with one caveat. You can confgure your filesharing clients more so than a MMO client or a VoIP client or another means of transferring data on your pipe. This leads to certain ad/dis-advantages... you can use them all simultaneously but you must have GOOD SETTINGS. If you are noticing lag problems with your MMO or VoIP client that is the most obvious sign of BAD SETTINGS. Coriolanus Posted October 26, 2008 Author Report Posted October 26, 2008 I never experience lag on my MMO but you right that I have no control over its use of my ISP's bandwidth -- but since I have no control over it, I wondered if takes up bandwidth from my torrents?I have several torrents that I suspect are going to take 1+ weeks to download. Often I get no activity on them or at best there maybe only 1 or 2 in the swarm. These are not eagerly sought after torrents as they are old audibooks so they see very little activity. Sometimes they show at the most only 1 seek and often I am not connected to it -- not sure why that is unless torrents work in a ring and pass the seed around to members in the ring.
thelittlefire Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Could it be the few seeds are not in your area and only torrent certain hours of the day Many ISPs enforce quotas for most of the day... perhaps this niche content is important, but not as important to the seeder as more popular data. If you leave those torrents running and active (not queued) they will download when available. My only question would be "are you connectable" meaning is your network status icon green saying "all OK" and you are receiving incoming connections. This is all you can do to be most connected person in the swarm.
Coriolanus Posted October 26, 2008 Author Report Posted October 26, 2008 MY network status icon is green and I am seeding another popular torrent for which I have completed the download. Actually it is uploading at a great rate of speed (it downloaded quickly too) So yes I have connectivity -- it is just the torrents I am after now have very little activity so I suspect it will take a long time to complete them.
