davidmoore
I'm using uTorrent 1.8.1 build 11903. Everythign works just fine but I run into an issue that when I'm still seeding a torrent and I try to extract rar archvies at the same time I use lots and lots of ram. When extracting a ~4.4gb set of archives I'll use my entire 4gb of ram. I've checked the processes and NOTHING takes claim. But if I were to close utorrent while I'm using all my ram, it drops immediately to 20% ram usage. I've tried this with downloads and archives of various sizes and it always happens. If I don't close utorrent, the extraction will eventually finish but it remain to use all my ram and will slowly trickle down to a nominal percentage use. If I stop the torrent, then extract, I don't have this issue. Does anyone else have this problem?
moogly
1st tip: use latest stable 1.8.1 build 126392nd tip: uT is totally independant of your pbm of RAM drops. It's RAR extracting that needs huge free RAM, more if you unpack huge archives.
thelittlefire
... Update. Your problem likely lies in the Ctrl-P > Advanced > Disk Cache settings. What are they?

thelittlefire
Tick "disable windows caching of disk reads"... this windows workaround does not allow the cache (for especially Vista) to eat up spare RAM, though there's no real problem unless your system slows down due to something paging to disk. davidmoore
I'm still having the same issue. But it isn't just when extracting files, so it's not an issue with WinRAR. If I copy the files from download location to another drive or if i use the downloaded files for transcoding. Even if the torrent is stopped in utorrent, it still uses up all the ram . DreadWingKnight
What uses up all the ram?
davidmoore
The task manager doesn't show which process is using all the ram, only that the ram is being used. If I close uTorrent, my ram usage goes back to normal and everything is fine.
vComet
Windows process manager sucks may I suggest you download the tool called Process Explorer and it will reveal what is the process eating the ram. Here is the file which is own by Billy Gates now.http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zipScreenshots of the app:http://i.technet.microsoft.com/bb896653.ProcessExplorer(en-us,MSDN.10).jpghttp://i.technet.microsoft.com/bb896653.ProcessExplorer1(en-us,MSDN.10).jpgSorry for the null out links but I hate to hotlink to microsoft!BTWI would next time close down the client and reboot which will would release the process that has hooked the rar filesand try to unrar before you restart the client and see what happens. davidmoore
It's not just raring. File transfer from one drive to another, if I'm demuxing a .m2ts file. Any type of use of the file will make it use lots of ram. Even if I stop the torrent it will still use it. I have to remove the .torrent file from my list for it to not be an issue. I'll try the process explorer and see what's up.
