Need general help w/ WRT54GL & portforwarding (using dd-wrt)

Today i just connected my new router to the pc. I went to utorrent to get the portforwarding situation started. Ports were not forwarded, went to portforward.com and ran into issues because my router setup screen is not the same as the Linksys one there, because of the dd-wrt firmware.

2nd, my other issue is when i searched for similar topics in previous posts, i notice users making differentiation between WRT54GL v2, v6 etcetc.... I don't know which model i have exactly. How do i find out? I typed in 192.168.1.1, and in the dd-wrt firmware it said model "Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS". I do not know if that is specific enough to work with.

Is there a separate walkthrough for the portforwarding for the dd-wrt? I do need step by step assistance for it since i don;t know very much about portforwarding.

stats: Windows XP

firewall: Windows default

Modem: Speedtouch

Router: Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS (??)

Thanks

Version of router is shown on a sticker under the router. Are you using DD-WRT v24-sp1? Does your connection work fine without it? What are the first two parts of the IP address displayed in the top right corner of the DD-WRT window? Have you done the connection timeout tweaks recommended for P2P applications? UPnP should be able to automatically forward it for you. Do note that there's a bug with the use of UPnP and manual port forwarding at the same time, you should disable it in µTorrents Preferences and reboot the router.

Thanks for the fast reply.

To answer you inquiries ->

1)Found the sticker, version = v1.1

2)On the router main page at the top right it says: Firmware: DD-WRT v24 (05/24/08) std

3)I do not know how to determine how to test my connection without the firmware. Might need an explanation on how, if it is important.

4)Top right corner ip, WAN IP: 69.196.141.216

5)I don't know about any connection timeout tweaks, i will need to be redirected for info for those.

6)I have uPnp port mapping enabled currently/recently when the router was started-up. The Yellow icon is down there and i cannot connect to peers. Would a re-boot be recommended? The ports are not forwarded ATM. From what i understand, you suggest shutting off uPnp and then manually forwarding ports + reboot router? (rebooting router means un/replugging the power or hitting the restart button on theback down for 10 seconds?)

If i am to manually forward ports, i need a walkthrough that addresses what to change in the router settings.

3) I was talking about bypassing the router :P

5) Bottom of the administration page, the timeouts, TCP shouldn't be so high, 120-240 is a good starting point.

6) UPnP on its own isn't working? Did you run a port forward test? Try updating DD-WRT first and then restart µT, you're using the latest µT right?

3) I see. Well that explains alot. For the past week or so i trashed my old router and have been running directly my connection from the modem. It was beautiful, no port forward problems, like a dream come true, utorrent was blazing along. Back to the router woes it is, now. So yes, i did bypass the router, everything went fine

5)Ok, will look into that.

6)Nope, had uPnp on for hours, the icon at the bottom has not resolved itself, even after restarting utorrent. I ran the port forward test, each time it says things are not forwarded properly. I am using utorrent 1.8.1

Umm, which one of those things should i download, in that link you provided? There's at least about 20 thinks to click with about 4 of them labeled dd-wrt/v24std. Got confused by that, sorry.

Any generic build you want except mega and micro (std = standard and will do, voip lets you do voip things).

If you still have trouble, setup a static IP address on your computer, outside your routers DHCP range (default range is .100-.149). If that still doesn't work, also disable UPnP in µT and then forward manually to your static IPa.

Are you using v1.8.1

uhhh. I *really* do not understand that site you linked to. I downloaded something, generic std, and it downloaded as a bin file. I am under the impression that it is a PowerISO file, PowerISO being a program i do not like. And apparently PowerISO doesn't like that file either.

Am i supposed to extract it? I tried. It said something about it being invalid.

btw, Yes, i am using utorrent 1.8.1

Yes, by now you might have noted that mr.DD-WRT is easily overestimated. My knowledge in these things can be embarrassing. You might want to spell things out for me as if i didn't even know where to find the on button on the pc. How did i get DD-WRT? Accident. I bought a new Linksys router (i was led to assume it was brand new) and when i plugged it in the 1st time, the firmware was already installed.

Anyway, i updated the firmware. utorrent still doesnt work after that process. So i went through the setup of static ip address, but THIS thing here has configuration steps for routers in their refault control panels. I'm running on DD-WRT and i don't know what to do after i set up the static IP, i don't know where to add values when i log into the router since it's different from the Linksys default one. That part i really need help with. I looked around, but nothing was obvious to me, so i left it alone.

I see, thanks for specifying, got it now.

10 minutes later:

I have had some degree of success at the moment, thanks for all the help along the way GTHK. Utorrent appears to function properly with the expected speeds.

However, i'm getting mixed signals when i go to double check Options>SpeedGuide>TestPortForward in utorrent. It reports to me that ports are not forwarded, even though i did the procedures detailed at portforward.com. I notice on the the results of "Test if Ports are Forwarded" that they say that port 38000 of utorrent is not forwarded to 206.248.158.127. I find that confusing, because i set up a static ip completely diefferent from that #. Should i be worried about that?

note: I left "Enable uPnp port mapping" Unchecked.

Did you choose a static IP address ending higher then 149 or lower then 100? Like 192.168.1.157 for example would be valid. Can't go higher then 254.

Also, the address you choose for yourself is private, and only applies to computers connected to your router. When doing a pf test, the address you see on it should match the address in DD-WRT's top right corner.

I chose a static ip (192.168.1.10) similar to that of my router (192.168.1.1).

Now i see where the other ip came from, it's the same one as at the top right of the router cp called WAN ip.

So then, why would the port forward test use this router WAN ip address rather than the static ip address that one takes so much trouble to configure? I mean, everything functions, yet the test indicates there is something wrong.

For the IP address, well, the one on your computer is for your personal network, other computers would also get similar addresses. I have 192.168.1.124 but that's in MY personal network. The separate addresses are also used to share your connection, right now chances are you're ordering only one IPa from your ISP, the router gives computers private ones while it gets your ISP assigned one, and then translates between the two (NAT).

You say that µT might be working well? What does your network status icon at the bottom show/say? (http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#What_do_the_Network_Status_lights_mean.3F). On the peers tab of a torrent, do you see any peers with an I? You need a torrent for following the paragraph, if you don't have a healthy one you can use an OpenOffice torrent.
