dorick
hi i live in an apartment with a bit torrent freak, he bit torrents all day and kills the connection for the rest of us, web browsing would be slow, and gaming's out of the question, we asked him to turn it down but he always leaves it on anyways. I have access to our router (DIR-625) and i've already enabled QOS to no avail, is there any way to limit the number of connections he's making through the router? or any other method to throttle his BT usage? thanks
GTHK
Well, looking at the router manuals, it looks like the QoS is actually for boosting games and VoIP. Your best bet would be to play hardball. You can block his access to the Internet, and you could also add the words announce and scrape to the URL/Domain blocking to block some tracker communication. The URL blocking can't be guaranteed however.
Switeck
If you can get him to listen, have him try settings from the 2nd link in my signature. They are more conservative than uTorrent's standard Speed Guide (CTRL+G) settings and should be a little "friendlier" for shared connections.Do note you'll need probably more than 40 kilobits/second upload and 500 kilobits/second download to spare in order to keep ping times reasonable.Hosting a realtime fast-action game server with more than 10+ players could eat a lot of bandwidth as well, so if you're wanting to try that he'll need even lower settings.
