Can I create my own files for upload?

Say I see a movie listed that quite a few people are downloading. I have that movie already but its in one file, like a .mkv. Can I convert it into the files needed, so I can use it to help boost my ratio? I realise I have to make all the files exactly the same as the torrent so it will work but how do I do it? I assume use Winrar or something.

Thanks.

O.k, what about if I have a movie on DVD? An original.

Edit : Getting it BYTE identical is more than likely impossible but hypertheticaly speaking I wanted to create my own torrent from an original, how is it done?

Clearly not impossible only in rare cases like exact compression or splitting.

Eg: the popular torrent is a file split in parts (RAR, .001, .002 etc).

You have the same file but entirely. It's possible to use WinRar or HJsplit to reproduce split files with the knowledge of the split size, the compression quality etc...

Errm, I didn't think that's quite what you meant... but http://utorrent.com/torrent.php is linked from http://utorrent.com/guides.php

In any case, like I say it's highly unlikely since the file you mention is lossy, but if you want to try your hand, surely you can use the same source, compression options, passes, and average bitrate :D goodluck.

Alas, wanting to "give", a useful side-effect of private trackers :D

Thanks for the help guys, I think I will give it a shot, just to see for myself really. thelittlefire, I know how to make a new torrent in uTorrent itself, as per the link you supplied, its actually creating the split rar files.

Anymore suggestions is always appreciated as I have tons of dvd's etc I'd like to add to my upload list. Also being a newbie into the private world of torrenting I want to do the right thing by helping out.
