Port Forwarding / Router question

Gentlemen:

I always have the ! sign in the status bar ('no incoming connections') - how can that be true when downloading is working?

When I check for port forwarding, I get 'Does not appear to be open' - same question, if the port is not open, how can downloading be working.

Is port forwarding only applicable if you have a router?

PS: I have a Prodigy Infinitum modem with multiple outputs but I don't you'd define it as a router.

Those addresses mean there's a router, and sometimes modems are actually routers :/

Try this website, if it works then you can configure the (a?) router (searching/giving us the make/model modem may help): http://192.168.1.254

Not sure what you're asking from that page - here's the modem details:

There is a page on that site where I can edit firewall settings - is that where I would 'open a port'? If so, how?

I got rid of the ! in the status bar by forwarding the port in the Prodigy Firewall Settings page.
