kablexxx Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 I have searched a ton of posts on this forum and google but have not found the specific answer I'm looking for.If it's been asked or addressed already (and I'm sure it has) then at least this will give an extra post for people to find keywords through. What are the advantages of having a +1.0 ratio?I am aware that the ethical thing is to give more than you get or at least an equal amount. However, do those that have +1 ratios get better download speeds or is it all the same? Is there any hook to sell seeding to the people who simply don't give a crap about the other downloaders? After all it would seem logical that you would want to get the people that are seeding a lot the files so that they could distribute it to others more quickly. Thanks and I apologize if I suck at searching.
GTHK Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 Not really a speed problem On private trackers you can keep your account, maintaining access to torrents that may be difficult to find or slow. When torrenting, if you don't upload very well then other peers/seeds might not upload to you very well.
kablexxx Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 How would they go about not uploading to you very well? By limiting their uploads to only people that seed not just leech?
GTHK Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 The BitTorrent protocol is designed to be tit-for-tat, a client is more likely to automatically focus on a "nicer" peer. Keeping over I think 4 KB/s per peer is recommended to prevent you from being cut off, and to not be a dick
kablexxx Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 I just learned the ratio aspect of torrents and what I would typically do is download a torrent and move the file off my computer due to limited space. My global statistics show a .429 ratio and I am currently seeding out all my recently downloaded files to get back on uTorrents good graces. My situation is that I plan to seed a lot and get quite a high ratio but want to ensure I allow these clients notice that I am one of the "nicer" peers. For the longterm, to ensure best download speeds, should I1. Upload 4kB per peer - requiring me to make sure each peer is getting the proper speed.2. Constantly seed (right now at 149KB), regardless of who's getting what? How does uTorrent detect nicer peers? Through a high ratio or what you are giving to each peer? Thanks a lot for the clarification.
GTHK Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Yeah...... just make sure you're well configured http://www.utorrent.com/setup_guide.php http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=34259
kablexxx Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 From dslreports.com I'm getting 2038 Kb down and 1409 Kb up but it seems incredibly high. How come I am never sending at that rate? I know there are people out there willing to download the torrents I have so why wouldn't it use all my bandwidth or at least half of it?From the chart you gave me it appears I should be using these settings correct?CONNECTION TYPE ║ UPLOAD ║CONNECTIONS║MAX ACTIVE║║(UPLOAD MAXIMUM)║Limit│Slots║ Torr│ MAX ║Torr│Down. 1.5 mbit/sec ║ 140│ 7║ 80│ 250 ║ 8 │ 6
GTHK Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 What ISP?2038 Kb/s = 254.75 KB/s1409 Kb/s = 176.125 KB/s
kablexxx Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 Comcast...I was completely calculating the wrong way. I thought 1409 Kb translated to 1.5 Mbps OOPS.Thanks a lot for your help.
moogly Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Yep don't forget the rule in communication science: 8 bit/s = 1 Byte/sFrequent source of error.
GTHK Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 1409 Kb/s = 1.3759766 Mbps (or 1.409 Mbps if you do it the non-computer way like HDD manufacturers )1.5 Mbps = 192 KB/sComcast screws up torrenting
Switeck Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 At the least, outgoing encryption needs to be set to Enabled or FORCED.Disable: DHT, LPD, and Resolve IPs.If you did manual router port forwarding, also disable UPnP and NAT-PMP.A high net.max_halfopen (anything over 8 is high) will likely only make the problems worse due to ComCast's monitoring schemes. Try the 1 megabit/second upload settings in the 2nd link in my signature...and possibly increase max upload speed limit a little, but no higher than about 140 KB/sec while downloading...and even that may cause some lag.You can certainly test higher upload speeds...but unless you have 6+ connected peers at once that are trying to download from you, the results may not match what your connection is capable of doing!
kablexxx Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 I disabled DHT, LPD, but am unable to locate Resolve IPs, where is that located? My net.max_halfopen is 8 by default so I'll leave it at that unless you think otherwise.I will play around with the settings a little - again thanks for the help.
Switeck Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Right-click in the PEERS window of an active torrent for the pop-up menu with Resolve IPs on it.
Beowulf Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 hi their,,,,,i h read about the utorrent in these types of Forum n many othere source,,,,i know that how much i download i should upload that much or little higher,,,,,, See my total upload ratio is 1.203 i h seeded some torrent at 2.0 ratio i think two torrents so far,,,,,and some torrents at 1.25 or 1.5 ratios,,,,,i m very aware that we should maintain our ratios as well,,,,,,,two years back i used Torrent only for donloading, i didn't knew we h to upload as well, now i know n i m maintaing my ratio, recently i came across forum (like this) where people mention that their total upload ratio is 18.025 or 10.025 some thing like that,,,,,n i think that is super huge n they also mention that their download speed is 1 or 2 mb/s,,,,,,, At that bandwith i would be able download 800mb file in 2-3 hrs right n i think thts great,,, Bottom line is how do people get so much bandwith,,,,wether its by maintaing upload ratio or something else,,,,,, Please some experienced Torrent user can throw some light in it,,,,,,what m i doin wrong,,,,,,i hvn't changed my setting so far,,,,,i think its really delicate matter,,,, So far i h downled 4 files n my ratio for each file n will seed in return for that,,,,, What i really want to know is how much my "Total upload Ratio" h to be,,,, Please anyone can give their review,,,,it would be a great help.........expecting reply soon,,,,,,,, Peace
