duck_man Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Hi All,I have been browsing around on this forum looking for tips to speed up my torrents however nothing seems to help.I have closely followed the setup guide and the maximum download speed I seem to be getting (collectively from all torrents downloading) is around 30kB/s. Despite this I seem to average around 6kB/s.I have a DSL connection with BT and my speedtest results on average are: 244kb/s DOWN 218 kb/s UP.Downloading files from web-sites have reached a max of around 500kB/s.Additionally I have followed steps to forward ports through my router and I have set up exceptions with windows firewall and AVG anti-virus. I have also set up my router so that I have a static IP.Testing my port reports that it is open and I have a "Network OK" green status Icon at the bottom of utorrent (version 1.8.1).Sorry for the long read, but any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance.
thelittlefire Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Don't set per-torrent upload limits?Did you test the test torrents in the setup guide http://slackware.com/torrents/Another possible explanation is ISP interference through what is called "traffic shaping", follow the sticky http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992 2nd post guides for reducing your presence to try and fool shaping hardware :/
Switeck Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Your measured internet speeds...were they in kilobits/second or KiloBYTES/second?2nd link in my signature...
duck_man Posted November 18, 2008 Author Report Posted November 18, 2008 Thanks for the replies, my measured speeds were kilobits/second, so am I getting the right download speeds at 50kB/s?Also I phoned up my ISP and I think the problem is that we had reached our download limit, and we're using a unlimited broadband package But there are 5 of us sharing connection so I guess that isn't surprising.
Switeck Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 That certainly doesn't sound "unlimited" to me!Apparently BT Central ADSL ISP in the UK thinks otherwise though...Encryption settings probably need to be set higher to overcome the hostile blocking of the ISP."244kb/s DOWN 218 kb/s UP" is in kilobits/second?If so, it would be impossible to get download speeds of 500 KiloBYTES/second.Make sure to not exceed your monthly bandwidth limits...
