RelievedSimpleto Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Hello,I just installed the Beta that just became available, and am running Little Snitch (firewall). First Little Snitch asked if I'd like to allow connections to update.utorrent.com. I understand that because I obviously want auto-update working. However, Little Snitch then informed me about a connection to 41.221.18.181, port 59724. I then googled this IP address to find out more info and it appears to be an "Anti-P2P IP to watch for." I am wondering why this connection is being made, and if it is really an "Anti-P2P IP to watch for."Edit: Just restarted uTorrent again, and it's randomly asking to connect to another IP which I do not recognize. A google result for this one doesn't bring up any data however. Mind you, this is with no torrents loaded, was just opening uTorrent to check it out. Just wondering what's going on with these seemingly random connections before I switch from Vuze (ugh).
eisa01 Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 My educated guess is that this is the DHT working.Just let µTorrent connect to any IP. This is a P2P app after all, so managing the connections on a case by case basis is futile.
Calcadium Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 That's pretty scary!!!Why would it connect to anti-p2p?
NoOneButMe Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Its more likely a false positive then a real connection to an anti-p2p group. The only mention of it is with one particular blacklist.
kjk Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 By its nature, when you download a torrent, a BitTorrent application will try to connect to peers that have that torrent file so you can expect a lot of connections to 'random' ip addresses. It's just how protocol works.
Switeck Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 If you really wanted to, you could disable DHT...but that can hurt torrent speeds on poorly-seeded + low peer public torrents.
jabb Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 The point is that uTorrent is contacting these suspicious IP addresses upon starup even if no torrents are loaded. Now, why would it start contacting a bunch of IP addresses (except for the address to the update server) with no torrent files loaded?
Ultima Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 My educated guess is that this is the DHT working. Are you expecting µTorrent to just know what IPs users consider "suspicious" and actively filter out such IPs?
eisa01 Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 What do you mean?I don't expect µTorrent to filter any IP.
Switeck Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 jabb, do you have DHT enabled? Are these incoming connections or outgoing?
jabb Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 Yes, DHT is enabled and all the connections are outgoing.
Ultima Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 @eisa01: I was quoting you to remind jabb that DHT causes this, and added my own note. I wasn't responding to the quote.
