gordon451 Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 G'day all --We've had uTorrent for a while now, v1.8.0.11813 on W2K Pro SP4, no software firewall, Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem Router (which has a nifty hardware NAT firewall) on a 256/64 line. Our ISP does not throttle P2P, and while our IP is not static it rarely changes (it's assigned from a pool). After struggling thru the setup we finally got it working. Port forwarding is not a mystery to us 'cos we need that for SoulSeek, so that part was done smartly.HOWEVER, we notice that the status light is frequently orange, and more and more often it stays red. BUT, here's the kicker: we have NO problems with seeding (uploads)! Whenever I check the port forwarding uTorrent reports that yes it is forwarded properly, and yes it is open and etc. Often the light changes to green if we do this. Please can somebody give us a clue of why that light won't always stay green?Gordon.
DreadWingKnight Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 BUT, here's the kicker: we have NO problems with seeding (uploads)! This ultimately means nothing. Connections, once established, are two-way.The main reason why the status light won't stay green is because you don't actually have remotely initiated connections.
gordon451 Posted November 28, 2008 Author Report Posted November 28, 2008 So it's not our setup then?Gordon.
DreadWingKnight Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 It MAY be your setup, and it may just be the torrents you use.
gordon451 Posted November 29, 2008 Author Report Posted November 29, 2008 Thanks for that. It probably is the torrents we use -- and perhaps because we don't leave the computer on seeding for 24/7 either. We normally start a download in the late evening, then leave it go overnight and stop the machine in the morning. We have not played with the settings very much because with the exception of the status light everything seems to work just fine, and I learnt long ago that if it ain't broke fixing it will almost certainly break it. Seeding works OK, so I've never worried over much.BTW, for what it's worth, I do NOT recommend the Netgear DG632 Modem-Router: its table-space is far too small and it appears to have no compaction or flushing routines. The Man said "you should NEVER have to reboot a router" but we have to reboot it almost regularly -- certainly after a SoulSeek or MSN session, and often after a uTorrent or YouTube session. I'll give you the drum: it's due for the scrap heap real soon, just as soon as I've researched a proper multi-port wired modem-router with decent memory space.Gordon.
