Seeding.

Hello, I'm new to all this and would like to ask for some help please.

I have been reading lots of information on this site but I can't find out exactly what I want to know.

As I said, I'm very new to this and I downloaded a couple of torrents but I deleted them as soon as they had finished downloading with out allowing them to be seeded.

Once I came across the articles about seeding I realized my error.

I read that an acceptable time to leave downloaded torrents was until they had a ratio of

"1:00"

Can someone please explain this to me please?

Also, I downloaded a file of 8GB and the information on my screen say's that while it has been seeding, it has uploaded 3 GB.

Is this fair enough?

I do not mind leaving it on longer, I just want to know 'what's what'

Thanks in advance.

µTorrent finished downloading, but now it says it's Seeding. What does that mean?

Seeding is where you leave your BitTorrent client open after you've finished your download to help distribute it (you distribute the file while downloading, but it's even more helpful if you continue to distribute the full file even after you have finished downloading). Chances are that most of the data you got was from seeds, so help give back to the community! It doesn't require much - µTorrent will continue seeding until the torrent is removed (right click the torrent, then hit Remove). Proper practice is to seed until the ratio of upload:download is at least 1.00.

Seeding is necessary to maintain the life duration of each torrent. Of course you can be a pure leecher and play "hit & run". That's the case on public trackers.

On private trackers you can do it too but offen there is a ratio system to maintain, so you need to seed what you have downloaded.

If your connection is fast, it's better to seed to 1:1 ratio each torrent.

Hello moogly and thanks for taking the time to reply.

I read the article you inserted into your post and it is the ratio that I am confused about, where it states.

"Proper practice is to seed until the ratio of upload:download is at least 1.00."

I read this as 'one to zero' and I do not understand that, if that is the case.

Where you suggest

"…it's better to seed to 1:1 ratio each torrent." I read this as 'one to one'

If this is the case, what is the ratio? Is it file size or the amount of time it took to download?

Sorry for these really basic questions.

Hello Everyone,

I'm also very new to this, and understand zilch! I'm curious about this "seeding" you're talking about and wondering if I'm doing something wrong, as well. After downloading, I always move the files where I like to keep them, and then delete the torrent file from my computer and the listing from the torrent window....is this wrong? Am I supposed to leave them there? Is this what is meant by seeding...by leaving it there someone else can benefit? And, for how long? In order to seed, do I have to leave everything exactly where it is, or can I still move the files and delete the torrent file? I hope I'm making sense.

Also, where is this ratio you're talking about? I've looked all over the torrent window and I'm not seeing anything that looks like one-to-one, etc.

Thank you so much for your help! I really do want to return the favor of what's been done for me, so any help would be appreciated!

Seeding/leeching are the 2 basic parts of the BitTorrent sharing protocol.

If you download a torrent and leave immediately after you finish it, you have a behavior of "hit & run".

Seeding means you upload data to the other peers and furthermore keep the torrent alive for future leechers.

You can seed during 2 hours, 1 wek or 6 months, as you want and depends on the popularity of the torrent.

Anyway you can use your file and seed it at the same time (eg for movies, mp3 etc...).

So a good behavior is seeding to reach ratio 1 for each torrent: you upload the same amount you have dwled.

Ratio is displayed in Show Statistics of uTorrent, watch Help menu.

Ok, I have no idea what that means....LOL....I'm sorry. So, does it mean I leave everything where it is for up to 6 months? I can't move my files to where I want them?

How do I, and what do I, upload?

I found the ratio thingy...thank you.

Maybe you need to read quickly this guide: http://www.utorrent.com/beginners-guide.php

BitTorrent is not a sharing system like usual filehoster (rapidshare etc...). There are no servers, no FTP, only peers (you & me) who have the file and share it.

Of course you give that you want: if you download 500 MB, you can upload for the other peers 100 MB or 1 GB.

What you can seed depends on your internet connection (UL speed), the other peers (if they want to dwl) & yourself.

Eg, it can be better to seed the last song of your local music band than the last episode of Prison Break... :D

In any loaded torrent you can change the data location by right click, advanced, set download location. You can do this with or without copying. Be sure you know where uT wants the data by checking General tab, Save As field.

SORRY I AM STILL NOT GETTING THIS. i JUST KEEP COPYING THE FILE TO MY MUSIC FILE. tHEREFORE I AM USING TWICE AS MUCH SPACE. HARD DRIVE IS FILLING UP QUICK. REALLY WANT TO BE A SEEDER NOT A LEECHER

You don't understand the previous post.

Stop your torrents, move your data (music, movie etc...), right click on each torrent job > Advanced > Set Dwl Location and choose the new folder where are your data.

As simple as "hello". :D
