hokusbloke
Can't seem to figure this one out. Ever since updating to 1.8 and 1.8.1 I have been chewing up memory. As you see I am using Nvidia but not the firewall....just the graphics care and the windows, vista 64, firewall. Anyone have any ideas about this. I've been over the boards and it seems that a LOT of sad souls, such as I, are in the same boat with no clear fix....Personally, I think this is utorrent....there are just too many people with this issue. If it were nvidia alone I should have it with other torrent clients...but only have it with the sister clients utorrent and bittorrent...Bitcomet and Vuze don't have it.But I like utorrent and want to stay with it...but only if I can fix this memory issue. moogly
Not sure what you mean by enable DLL mode (ctrl+D)?In Process Explorer with uT running, select the process utorrent.exe & enable DLL mode (to see DLL injecte in uT).Anyway I see uTorrent, BitTorrent, BitTorrent DNA & PeerGuardian.PG is maybe the culprit. moogly
1/ I see you are using Object Dock http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/It's injected in uTorrent but I doubt it's the source of your issue.Anyway can you try to disable or install it and see if uT works fine.2/ Did you update Nvidia drivers ? hokusbloke
Disabled objectdock and the bleeding continues. I've updated my drivers about a month ago but this has been going on longer than that. I'm of the opinion that the issue is with utorrent....great little program but it's really become sketchy since 1.8...if I were one of a few that have had this problem I would not think this but I am one of a large crowd. I really don't see what else there is to do but try another torrent client at this point. If you have any other ideas I'd be glad to hear them. thanks. DreadWingKnight
Where is the memory bleed? Is it the utorrent.exe process using all the ram or is it just windows?
hokusbloke
When I disable utorrent.exe (shut it down) my memory use drops from as much as 5GB to 1.65GB and stays there. After I turn utorrent or bittorent back on it slowly creeps back up to 4 or 5GB. And then, inexplicably it may return to 1.65GB and then creep and/or spike back up to 4 or 5GB.Therefore, I am reasonably certain that it is utorrent and no other problem. Also, when I am using other programs (as long as utorrent is disabled) I do not have this memory issue....only with the utorrent. Curious....no?P.S. I have also updated my nvidia drivers today...just to be safe and the same problem persists.
DreadWingKnight
So it's not actually increasing in the utorrent process?Bypass the windows disk cache completely in the advanced disk cache settings.
hokusbloke
not prepared to mess with those settings....sorry...this is a utorrent bug because 1.7.7 worked fine...the issue is with this less than flawless update. sorry. Ultima
So how do you explain the fact that those options were added because people were experiencing the exact same issues you seem to be experiencing, for many versions prior to 1.8, and that the options happened to fix it in 1.8? That the bug is still with 1.8, and not 1.7.x and prior? The fact of the matter is, the problem existed long before 1.8 did, and perhaps some disk IO changes in 1.8 may aggravate the problem for users who weren't previously experiencing the problem (I don't know), but at least it has an option that solves the problem for everyone. If you're unwilling to try the option, that's your prerogative, but don't blindly blame 1.8 as being the problem just because you couldn't be bothered to test a simple option or two. Switeck
You're very willing to blame but not willing to test 2 check boxes?
hokusbloke
I'm not really blaming utorrent but i've been at this long enough...including the time I've spent on my own. I'm waiting for 1.9 stable before coming back. In the meantime I've migrated to BitComet and with hang there for the time being. I do think, honestly, that it is utorrent because there are so many people I know that are having this problem and because of the comments/problems on these boards. If utorrent isn't owning up to the issue that is a little disingenuous...but that's just an opinion because I just don't have enough data to state anything conclusively. I've always been a utorrent fan but I am also practical....if something isn't working for me I move on to find something that is. And right now that something is BitComet. Maybe we can hook up again....but the problem has to be solved.
DreadWingKnight
So you're basically saying right now that you're unwilling to troubleshoot the issue to see if we really can indeed fix it?
Ultima
I do think, honestly, that it is utorrent because there are so many people I know that are having this problem and because of the comments/problems on these boards.Yet, when presented with a potential solution that has helped plenty of other users on this very board, you flat-out refuse it? Are you sure you're looking for a solution, or are you here to simply inform us (in some grand way) that you've gone off to BitComet? (It takes more effort to switch to than it does to just tick 2 checkboxes, by the way)If utorrent isn't owning up to the issue that is a little disingenuous...What's disingenuous about not owning up to an issue that, from the information presented here (or lack thereof), isn't necessarily a µTorrent issue? What is disingenuous is how you claim it's a µTorrent bug, and that we're ignoring it, even though you're refusing to try a possible fix. It's a bit naïve of you to think that by ignoring a problem, it'll magically disappear (spontaneously). We're obviously not experiencing the problem here, and if we can't see it, we won't know how to fix it. By switching to another version/client, you're almost guaranteeing that it won't be fixed (if there is anything to be fixed).Edit: Oh, and FYI, we've never said that nVidia graphics cards cause memory problems. nVidia's nForce motherboard chipsets aren't the same thing, and it's a specific component in their drivers (Network Access Manager) that causes apparent memory leaks in µTorrent as well as in many other P2P applications. hokusbloke
Okay...I think some are becoming a little heated over this issue. All I am saying is that there are some things I feel uncomfortable doing and that these should be taken care of by utorrent automatically or because of coding or some mysterious gremlin issue things are not behaving as they should. I don't know the cause and no one else seems to either. I have been given some radically different fixes and I have tried them...but it seems now that I am chasing my tail with these fixes. I do have a life to live after all...and a job. Since I don't have the problem with bleeding memory in BitComet or Vuze I have migrated to bitcomet for the time being. I am playing with 1.9 (utorrent) but only to see if the issue is solved there...the verdict is out on that one so far....but with BitComet it's all clear sailing so far....no bleeding memory issues...and I've been running that for a few days now. It is because of the fact that BitComet is not demonstrating any of the issues that utorrent is that I say the issue is a utorrent bug and not a system/config issue for my computer. If it were my system then I would expect to see the same issue in BitComet and Vuze...but I am not experiencing that in either. I'm switching because I am not married to uTorrent...it's just a convenient bit of freeware....when it stops being convenient I'm outta here. If it's starts being convenient again then I will return. Of course, some of you are utterly devoted to the program....I, however, am not one of these...I have a job, career, family, and friends that are all vying for my time....I'm sorry if uTorrent believes it should have an equal claim to my limited resources. That's a social issue that can't be addressed here. I simply expect, as most consumers (especially software consumers/users), that the product will work as advertised. If it does not then there are other products that do and are just as easy to use though maybe not as comprehensive as uTorrent. The problem is I do not have the time to help solve this issue and find it easier to move on. My time on this board has been short but the time I spent on my own and speaking with friends about the issue has been much more involved. Then my wife asked why I just didn't use another program....and there it was...a bolt from the blue....I could change programs....after all you are not Microsoft or Apple....I'm not tied to your product...I can use other ones. For the moment that is what I am doing but will keep an eye out for the next stable uTorrent and then try it. If the new one works I'll switch back...if it doesn't I'll stay with either BitComet or Vuze. I regret if anyone's feelings are damaged by this choice on my part or if I have given any offense. Neither of these were intended. Best of luck finding a solution to this problem...because it is not just happening to me....a lot of people on these boards are having this trouble....and that leaves a lot more, which have not even tried the forum, that have just given up on uTorrent and Bittorent...moving on to other clients. Best of luck and Wishes for this Holiday Season.David.
DreadWingKnight
So the answer to my question ends up being a "yes".Your long-winded answer says you're unwilling to troubleshoot with us to help us solve the problem if indeed the problem is with uTorrent. That's how problems do not get fixed. Ultima
I don't know the cause and no one else seems to either.*sigh* Despite the fact that we keep telling you exactly what the problem is? Really?I hope you realize that BitComet bypasses the Windows cache by default. Yes, it forces enabled the options we're asking you to enable right now, and that's almost certainly why it doesn't exhibit the issue. It was something in BitComet that users were asking to be implemented in µTorrent for a long time because µTorrent was apparenly leaking memory (when in reality, it was a Windows issue we needed to work around). Here's one of many examples from pre-1.8 versions: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=245905#p245905Look at the situation from our point of view: the user asks for our help, we try giving the user help, and the response from the user is turn away almost immediately, even with the solution immediately in his face. It's quite annoying and frustrating to see a user complain to us about a problem, and when presented with a solution, says "la la la I don't want to hear it you guys know nothing la la la.". Given that, the user has little to no right to say it's a µTorrent bug. You're right, you can change programs if you like, and that is (again) completely your prerogative. We don't get paid if more users use µTorrent (in fact, we don't get paid at all, not being BitTorrent employees and all), so it doesn't really affect us in any way. What we do, we do in the users' best interests, because we have no incentive to do otherwise, and if the user doesn't care for it, we can't do much about it.(BTW, other users may be quick to point out to you examples of why BitComet is a bad/abusive BitTorrent client that is generally bad for swarms, but I don't have those links on hand)
hokusbloke
If only to place along...what is it you would like me to change in the Disk Cache? I've already overridden the cache and have it set a 800 mb. Should I deselect caching of disk writes and caching of disk reads too?
Ultima
For the moment, don't override the automatic disk cache. Disable the following options, enable the rest:- Override automatic cache size and specify the size- Write out finished pieces immediatelyAnd by the way, uninstall BT DNA. And don't run the BitTorrent client alongside µTorrent.Edit: What is your connection's maximum upload and download rates?
hokusbloke
I don't know my upload and download maximum speed but I upload through utorrent at 2-3mb per second and can download, with enough seeds/peers, between 1-3 mb per second. I've done speed tests but those things are useless because they do not reflect what I actually do in real time. Here's what I've done:deselected override automatic cachedeselected write out finished pieceshave enabled all else including: increase automatic cache size when cache thrashingI have uninstalled BT and BT DNAIs this what you wanted?? Ultima
Yes. If you end up having disk overload troubles (you have a rather fast connection), feel free to override the disk cache size and set it to something like 64MB or 128MB.All that's left is for you to let it run a few hours to see if the problem persists.
