Utorrent 1.8.1 causes CPU usage to go up to 100%

Hi everyone, I greatly appreciate your help. I've been using Utorrent for a long time now and it has never given me any problems. But starting a couple of days ago, whenever I download something, even just 1 torrent, my CPU usage would go up to 100%. I don't recall making any drastic changes, I installed WINAMP and uninstalled it after trying it out but I doubt that that is the root of the problem.

I did had the same problem. I was downloading to a external harddisk. That was the problem. Now I shut down my external harddisks and download to internal harddisks. Now I don't have this problem anymore.

After turning off WindowsBlind, the problem is somewhat better. But it still shows heavy CPU usage that fluctuates (for example, from 4%ish to 65%ish).

One thing that sticks out is that the system idle process in task manager shows a 97 under the CPU column. I don't know if it's suppose to be like that but it seems to be an awful high number.

"Idle" is idle.. it was apparently, way back when, what the programmers of the time decided to make the CPU do when it wasn't otherwise busy... as processing time was pay-by-hour/shared/$$$

Like DWK says, styler/WB . . does it still show up in a process explorer log when turned off?? If you search, you'll see skinning apps have been reported and fingered as the culprit in certain cases like this.

I uninstalled WindowsBlind and Styler and a check of process explorer shows no DLLs related to those programs so I'm guessing they're gone for good. But the problem is still there. start > run > mspaint at least has those options... other more robust image editors will do more options

Here it is but unfortunately it doesn't show much more than before. :/ Last idea... does AVG resident shield have "web protection"?? Is there a way to exclude utorrent.exe from its active scanning temporarily at least, or to uninstall to see if it's the cause Sorry I don't have more positive news.

Sorry about the picture, forgot to change to another format :S.

I did turn off the whole AVG program to see if it was conflicting but it didn't solve the problem >=(.

Also, I added the Utorrent directory to the exceptions list in Resident shield and didn't work either.

Did you check AVG services from start > run > services.msc ?

That would be the last third party options seeing from the PE log. Alternative explanations may stem from your korean IME (doubtful), or freeram pro, or perhaps your Ctrl-P > Advanced > Disk Cache settings in uT itself. Did you override anything there??

Can you think of anything else which may preceed the problems showing up... updating your Catalyst driver? Windows update?

Well I never touched anything in the disk cache settings.

The ones I have unchecked are:

"Override automatic cache size and specify the size manually(MB)"

"Increase automatic cache size when cache thrashing"

"Disable Windows caching of disk reads"

I also highly doubt the Korean IME from having anything to do with it.

Maybe I'll check if there are new Catalyst driver or even uninstall FreeRAM Pro and post an update.

Yeah. OK, sometimes problems go away when you UNCHECK the windows cache of reads and writes (write is default ON)... because it doesn't always work as expected across all windows and over network shares.

Like I said, out of ideas, so if you come up with something or remember anything feel free to bring it up. Otherwise, sounds like a weekend of poking at it.

I don't know if everything's back to normal or not, I just downloaded something and was monitoring the CPU usage. It didn't go all that high... maybe uninstalling something like Windows Blind did the trick. Going to post another update when I download again.

I found something really weird, in add/remove programs, utorrent is listed as having a size of 9766MB...

does anybody know what's going on?
