kablexxx Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Hey everyone,After buying an external Western Digital 750gb USB 2.0 drive, I set it as the default drive for uTorrent. I have Fios 20/5 and for a while I was getting 100% disk overload which I believe was a result of my downloading several files at once to the external drive. I changed some cache preferences and I have had no issues since. My problem is that the system is running very slow when I use uTorrent with the drive...any files I try to play off the drive while uTorrent is in use are very slow. Skipping around a lot and taking forever to load.Is the problem a result of the drive not being able to handle so many connections and bits of files at once?Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. My uTorrent settings are set a little less than the "2mb" settings in this thread: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=34259------------------------------------------Western 750GB Drive (E:) is a Fat32 filesystem.Dell Dimension 2400Windows XP SP3Intel Celeron 2.4 GHZ2Gb of Ram
thelittlefire Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 If you're downloading to the external, don't try to play simultaneously. Bittorrent is random access, not sequential throughput. It would be a better idea to seed from the external (setup the completed folder on there).General system sluggishness is usually due to other software interfering, but if it is just when you're trying to write and read data off the drive... that's to be expected unfortunately.
kablexxx Posted January 10, 2009 Author Report Posted January 10, 2009 So if I understand correctly, to try and fix my problem I should set up the internal C: drive for incompleted files, then upon completion have them moved to the external western drive? What about these preallocation settings that I have seen?I'm beginning to worry that this isn't a utorrent problem (but haven't ruled it out completely) because upon startup today, before even opening utorrent the system was hanging and I receive the following errors in event viewer:DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service StiSvc with arguments "" in order to run the server:{A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811}For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.When trying to play movie files from my external they are skipping around now, even after a fresh restart.
