abrogard
Is there a method of doing an 'individual' peer to peer? i.e. my sending my files directly to my friend's computer? I believe this is what FTP does, is that right? Or wrong? Something else? Something better?ab
Switeck
You could host your own tracker and send them torrents (via email) that way.Almost more trouble than it's worth unless you've got a LOT of upload bandwidth. You'll also need to be unfirewalled in uTorrent for that to work! moogly
You can use too a public announce like http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org:80/announce when you are creating your torrent and send the .torrent to your personal peer by email. As the .torrent is not published & indexed on the tracker, nobody can leech it, only you (as seeder) and your peer. abrogard
Thanks moogly. Looks like the way to go. Does anyone happen to know if we can do direct file transfers by something like FTP, without needing to create a Torrent?
moogly
Maybe you can transfer files between 2 FTP clients, I don't really use FTP client. Try FileZilla.Or use free file hosters.
Ultima
Other methods of transfer may not be as robust/reliable as BitTorrent with regards to data integrity.
abrogard
Thanks again to everyone for their input. I'll try the public announce method suggested by moogly. I think it could happen in at least some places in the world in the near future that we'll all have to find new ways of distributing files as governments and power groups initiate ever more restrictive censoring of web traffic. I'd like to be prepared.
scott1x
I have used filezilla, client and server, for some time with excellent results. For sending data to one destination, I'd prefer it to a p2p approach, but if the destinations were multiple, p2p would offer the speed advantages of swarming. It makes sense to choose the approach that works best for your environment. With FTP, you do need to pay attention to access and permissions! It is possible to inadvertently allow access to your full environment! That would NOT be a good thing!

Gwarfon
Skype (www.skype.com) also allows you to share files directly as well as chat or voip.
abrogard
It does! Amazing. The wife uses it all day every day. Any size file? I shouldn't ask. I should check for myself. I will. Thanks for the clue.
