broadband been upgraded, download speed still the same

first time poster, hi.

ive tried to sort this out myself for the past few days. ive used the various guides on the forum and looked through some posts to see if i could find a solution.

the problem is my broadband speed has been upgraded from 1mb to 4mb yet the total download speed i reach is only on a par with the old connection. ive done several speed tests and they come out fine, ive downloaded trailers/game demos and get regular download speeds of mid 400KB/s. ive had a few files going at once and just one file going but nothing has so far topped 100KB/s download.

i was getting that on my old connection, i think i probably averaged something around 80KB/s previously, so thought 4mb would give me a bit more. i know there are lots of things to take into consideration but i thought id at least get over 200KB/s, should i? the upload is fine though, ive done the sums and set it between 30 and 36KB/s and that is always being reached, infact by the time id finsihed a download id uploaded around 3/4 of the file which i dont mind as long as im getting good download speeds which im not. i even tried lowering the upload to what i had it set to previously but that only lowered my download speed.

im using a cable motorala modem plugged into back of p.c. with usb. i know that is working fine yet it seems something is stopping the speeds from going up. ive given utorrent access from the firewall: sygate and winxp's own one. any advice please?

cheers.

thanks for the replies.

ive just done the openoffice torrents and i got upto 484KB/s and for the majority of the download it stayed above 470KB/s

ive just looked in device manager in windows and via rhine 11 fast ethernet adapter is listed.

how can i check if my ISP limit bittorrent.

for global maximum download rate ive left it at unlimited, 0. i have tried it with a variety of figures and none seemed to make much difference so i left it as it was. its a bit annoying as it does seem i can reach decent speeds.

on the last speed test i ran the results were

downstream 3846 kbps 480 KB/s

upstream 362 kbps 45 KB/s

cheers.

im on 1.4 havent been using utorrent long, about a week know and when i downloaded it sent me to this version.

could it be anything to do with the listening port, i left it as it was when i started it up, and all ive done with firewalls is to allow utorrent access.

in µTorrent 1.4, it got a new peer connection method called round-robin.

This method causes trouble for weak modems and routers.

So download 1.3 and if you still have the same problem,

then something else might be the problem.

here's the thing im assuming they have upgraded the upload speed too. on the website it says upload to be increased from 120k to 380k know with all the confusion i have over k and K im not sure. all i know is my last speed test had upload at 362kbps so does that match their quote of 380k.

the network is showing as ok.

cheers.

Oh, I hate to tell you this. But you might consider the possibility that this is simply natural. You do indeed have a 4Mbit class download connection if you can download at 400KB/s via FTPs. Your upload setting is approximately correct considering the speed of your upload pipe.

The fact is that your torrent and the quality of everyone else in said torrent has great importance to how fast you move. I have a 6Mbit/640kbit connection (though the practical upload limit is closer to 512kbit). I know that speeds over 100KB/s for me are the rarity rather than the rule. There are many, many days in which my DL is lower than my 54KB/s UL

Basically, you shouldn't whine that you have a problem if you can do over 20KB/s Down on a torrent. Unless of course you are consistently doing faster on another client that's not BitComet.

BitTorrent in practice tends to be a socialist system. Your download does not rise in proportion to your upload. With optimistic unchokes you can get a trickle even without upload, and if you exploit it (BitComet), you can get something for nothing in principle - which is one of the reasons why all those private trackers ban BitComet.

PS2: Oh, you are getting good results from OpenOffice torrents. Then yes, the problem is almost certainly with your torrent and the peers on said torrent. OpenOffice torrents is AFAIK a kind of utopia that does not really reflect on reality very well.

just done that and put in the numbers that it suggested. it also said the listening port was open and working. do i need to do anything else with the port number. ive read a bit about port forwarding, as i dont have a router does that apply to me?

cheers, got you know just done that.

sorry if it seems im going on a bit here. the reason why im trying to get it sorted is because i want to do this properly. i know im not going to get anywhere near the 4mb but i just thought it would have been a bit more than what i was getting on the 1mb connection. as i said these speeds seem to be similar to what i was getting before.

thanks for the help its been appreciated. just had a little look and it seems the speed has gone up slightly, and the upload is still going along at 35KB/s. just wandering will that be the case that the upload will reach the max setting even if the download speeds arent brilliant.

i have a quick question about torrents. i only use a couple of sites to get them as they seem to be reliable but on the one im downloading know says im using 40 seeds out of 812. i suppose you never connect to them all? also i dont really understand tracker/ing do i need to sign up to anything?

sorry just remembered one last thing, in one of the guides it mentioned patching tcpip.sys it says do you want to change the limit to 10 what do i do here as i may have done this wrong.

thanks again

i am indeed using telewest. they supposedly started the upgrades last september and where i am was to be done by end december but that was pushed back to end january so i was a little suprised to see the upgrade last week. so far so good, just have to get the speed on uttorrent tweaked a little.

hangon a sec:

you said you get 470KB/sec on an openoffice torrent (which is large, well distributed etc)

-> so this proves your conenction is capable of torrenting at these speeds

and the other files you download come at 100k/sec.. im sure you appreciate that the file youre downloading has to actually come from somewhere.. and if that somewhere is one guy out in nepal on a satellite link with an upload speed of 3kb/sec then youre only going to d/l 3kb/sec even if you work for BT (thats british telecom) core and have a fiber connection straight into the back of your PC..

pick torrents with more seeders and leechers, and download more torrents at once

also note that free upgrades from ISPs normally come if you dont use your conenction very much. a mate of mine has been upgraded twice since buying because he never torrents.. he just web, email and vpn. another mate who rapes his connection silly with torrents has been cut off twice in 3 months.. 100k/sec is good for a torrent.. just be more patient

i realise that and will leave it for a while and be patient and just see how it goes. my reason for posting originally was to see if there was something i needed to change as my download speeds were the same as on the 1mb connection.

i am downloading 2 torrents at the moment. one says in brackets 4000 seeds yet im only connecting to 40 the other one has nearly 600 in brackets and im connecting to 20. is that normal to only connect to such a low percentage.

ICleolion have you checked out the telewest page on digital spy forums, i went there last week when i was trying to get more info on the upgrades.

cjard fair enough but 40 odd out of 4000 seeds seems a bit low thats why i wondered if im blocking something or if there is something i need to change

cheers.

cjard: fortunately for users like me and cirdan then telewest don't give a rats ass what we do with our connections. very good ISP they are. the last upgrade they rolled out, my area was one of the first to recieve it. So suppose its only fair that i'm gonna be one of the last to get upgraded this time.

4mb. I started off with the 512kb service. Which they upgraded to 1mb, and i'm praying they upgrade it to 4mb before the end of february, otherwise the new wave of torrents i'm downloading i'm gonna fall behind on.

I will take a look at that page on the digital spy forums.
