madlife098
Hi all. My status always reads no incoming connections yet I see that people are uploading from me. I've followed all of the instructions on portforward.com. So why am I not able to go green? Does utorrent give false readings?
DreadWingKnight
The ability to upload is not directly linked to getting incoming connections.
madlife098
Hi can you elaborate? Maybe I'm not wording this correctly? In theory if there's no incoming connections, when I look at utorrent the "up speed" column should be completely blank, correct? I'm saying that it isn't, there are files where I see the "up speed" active. So I'm assuming perhaps incorrectly that people are downloading torrents from me.As an fyi, Downloading is not an issue, I'm able to do it. I have a program called open port searcher that scans my ports and it gives an open port positive to the port I have assigned in the uTorrent preferences. So if open port searcher says my assigned port is open and i see "up speed" active why am I not turning green?
Ultima
Analogy: Say, for whatever reason, you can't receive incoming phone calls your phone's ringer is muted/broken, so you never hear or know of incoming calls (almost like being firewalled). You can still make outgoing phone calls, so you call your friend, and say "Hi" to him. Now, how is your friend able to hear you say "Hi" when you can't take incoming calls? Because the ability to send voice over the wire has nothing to do with whether you can take incoming calls.Taking the analogy back to port forwarding, just because you can't receive incoming connections doesn't mean you can't make outgoing connections. Once a connection is established, data can move both ways -- that means you can both download and upload on that particular established connection.Reiterated: That your port isn't forwarded simply dictates who can initiate the data transfer, not whether or not the data transfer can occur. Whoever is firewalled (doesn't have their port forwarded properly) cannot take incoming connections, but can make outgoing connections to other users (as long as the user on the receiving end of the connection establishment attempt is not firewalled too).
