JohnSmythe
I am new to this world of torrents, I just "found" the forum today [avatars???]An internet friend told me about torrents, which I did not know about.I looked for a client, and picked uTorrent, which got good reviews.I d/l version 1.3 about a week ago, it looked very user friendly and intuitive.I did not have any time to play with it asa message came that 1.4 was available, so I usgraded.Well...-as mentioned in other threads, I would get a blue screen with the usual micro-babble"something caused an error in something" hit enter, etc.but the connection was broken and uTorrent closed.Whether/when this would happen was not predictable, files were from <30MB to over a GB-also, my Norton anti-virus would pop-up every few secondswith an internet worm warning, and I would have to hit "permit"This has stopped now that I went back to version 1.3which is great.I am not using any routers, etc., just a simple modem.Have an Ultra high speed DSL connectionWinMe PIII 900 mhz, 384MB RAM 2x80GB HD
Firon
Dump Norton, it's very crummy and known to cause problems with many applications. It also doesn't protect you in the slightest.

chaosblade
Try disabling DHT in the client first and see if the problem remains. DHT and UDP packets in general are very straining on really bad routers.
JohnSmythe
chaosblade now, I do not understand what you meanwhere does the router come in, at my ISP?its Bell Canaa, soassume they are not that crummy. Now to be fair, 1.3 also breaks connections, I thought the DHT helped to keep them?Further explanation would be appreciated as well.Firon Norton was recommended to me by repair techs, so how can it be so crummy? What anti-virus product would you recommend?Always ready to give something new a try.TIA

DreadWingKnight
Norton was recommended to me by repair techs, so how can it be so crummy?Norton is resource hungry.Norton gives false positives.Norton interferes with normal system operation.Norton doesn't listen when you tell it you've upgraded a program. Those are 4 of a miryad of ways it's crummy. Norton has a big budget, techs get paid to promote Norton products. 'Nuff said.2.) ClamWin (free), e-Trust or NOD32.
Animorc
I would get a blue screen with the usual micro-babble"something caused an error in something" hit enter, etc.but the connection was broken and uTorrent closed. Is this really a BSOD? I mean, the bluescreen of death makes your display show you a nice bluish color. This is not letting you hit the [ Enter ] key.Anyway, did µTorrent create a crashdump? (probably in the same directory utorrent.exe is located, or perhaps %appdata%\utorrent)
Switeck
Norton was totally aware of what Sony was doing with their XCP "rootkit" audio cds for a long while, letting 100's of thousands of computers get infected without warning their users...for something close to 1 year before the general public found out.I have personally dealt with computer viruses that had infected 10+k computers that were over 6 months old that Norton couldn't/wouldn't detect.Norton has "phone home" stuff now and even anti-copy stuff that vastly reduces the real value of their products to their customers. They have not given full disclosure on these matters, except in response to security researchers exposing their very questionable business tactics...they had to make a press release to paint themselves in a better picture. In short, lie their way out of it.Ever since Peter Norton sold out, Norton products have gone downhill.
hofshi
Norton had a rootkit of their own, that hides a directory on your coputer...
JohnSmythe
I doubt the shop that did the recommending is being paid off by Norton.Yes, it is and extreme resource hog.I uses 10-15% more resources, I'm lucky to start at 75%I know of AVG, but not ClamWinbut being free, is it that good?I was using a different one it was free, then you had to payit became eTrust I think it was by CAand usable resources were at a higher leveland then switched to Nortonhave it till novemberany thoughts on Norton SystemWorks? I have 2003 Professional Edition
chaosblade
JohnSmythe: Simply, When using DHT alot of UDP packets go in and out of your connection. ALOT of them. Shitty routers (hardware device) tend to not deal with the heavy load and breakdown.Your modem might be acting the same. After cleaning out your computer from norton, I'd try again.Systemworks, Meh. There are some decent tools there, but im reluctant to use any symantec software at all.
JohnSmythe
I have turned off the DHT.Have much much much fewer disconnects/blue screensI have visited many forums, and heard much about Norton AVbut most of it is positive, so, what to do. The subsription runs till Nov.The Systemworks was a "gift", and does help keep things tidy.Lastly, could someone explain "scraping"what is it? do I need it on?Many thanks...I am looking into NOD32
chaosblade
'Scraping' is the concept of asking the tracker to tell you how many seeds and peers are on a certain torrent.
