Ultima 7 Report post Posted February 23, 2009 Oh, it can definitely be quite dramatic. I've seen plenty of cases where speeds are slow (sub-10KiB/s), only to jump to 100+ KiB/s immediately after a simple port forwarding.@chupakabra: Broken link.

Jimbo4947 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Is utorrent safe from hackers. I wouldnt want any of my personal information grabbed by a hacker. Please let me know if there is a setting in utorrent for that particular situation. I have Norton Anti virus but not sure if it will take care of that.
Chastity 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 @Jimbo4947The setting you are looking for can be found in:Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove ProgramsScroll down until you see the listing for uTorrent, and click the remove button.Seriously, we are talking about P2P software here. Due to it's very nature, I would suggest you do some research on Google before you attempt to use uTorrent, or any other P2P app for that matter. If you're gonna play with the Big Dogs.......get my drift? Switeck 1 Report post Posted February 28, 2009 uTorrent itself is secure. Now you may download a TORRENT containing a virus...and manually run that virus...but that's not uTorrent's fault. You may also have an older version of Windows that has known exploits...but once again that's not uTorrent's fault. This is why we recommend using a "high" incoming port (10000-65500) for uTorrent's listening port -- that way it is extremely unlikely other programs are listening on that same port. Those programs may be vulnerable too.
hunt3r 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2009 This is agood oportunity to insist in DEP & ASLR & SAFESEH features (Windows XP SP2 & Windows Vista). They are extreamly easy to implement and helps to increase the security of programs:Protecting Your Code with Visual C++ Defenseshttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc337897.aspxAs i said in a previously post, the last emule version (0.49c) implement all this security features... in fact more and more software are implementing this features because the cost benefit is clear. Richard Choi 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2009 hunt3r: thanks for the link... I am not sure if other devs already investigated this, but I'll take a look. Some of these options may affect performance or code size, but we'll run some experiments.
fowl 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 There aren't plans to drop support for OSes earlier than 2k though are there? That would probably improve security more than anything else although I'm sure the reduction in the testing matrix would be huge. (VS08 and above doesn't support pre 2k)
Firon 3 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 I've been wanting to drop pre-2k support for some time now and this is a great excuse to do so.
rafi 185 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 this is no excuse ... as the sole client suitable for W98 you should be faithful to your 98 remaining believers
Chastity 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 @FironNo No no ...!There ARE some of us that still use Win98 SE2 for legitimate legacy reasons. I can see dropping ME and 2K, but SE2 works. Please, don't leave us out in the cold like every other developer has...ok???
moogly 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 Win98 is not supported anymore by MS. Why a third party like uT should do it? Bigger programs like Firefox don't do too.
rafi 185 Report post Posted March 2, 2009 cause it's a smaller program ?...
uthappyuser 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 Any time spent on development for a completely dead OS (and based on Microsoft's abandonment of it, it really is dead) is just wasted. Look to the future and let 1.8.2 serve the needs of those rooted in the past.
hunt3r 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2009 As far as i know none of the security features that i posted before make the program incompatible with previos versions of Windows. As i said the new eMule 0.49c has this features and still works under Windows 9x.Anyway i agree with the "renew or die".
