resume.dat corrupted , unable to save resume file

hi - this is my 4th, 5th? time losing my torrents. at first i thought it was my noob-ness, then a firewall i installed, my very old laptop, but i am not sure what is going on. im not just jumping on here without hours reading and trying to figure this out for myself, but there is a lack of skill on my part. i didnt want to post because i was embarrassed for losing all my torrents again and again. but its about to happen yet again, (EDIT: it HAS happened again) and im frustrated. i must be doing something really wrong, something basic. i followed the set up, speed test - but i really dont get much more than this.

quite often i will build up a high number of torrents and seeds and then the resume.dat will become "corrupted and un-readable" - when i come back, aye - everything is gone, or i try to finish a torrent before it gets too bad and then i shut it down. i didn't realize i could load up everything again, and when i did add the torrents then didnt behave properly. anyway. not all of them remember... i really do not like losing my ability to contribute to the communities i belong to.

in seeking out forum answers: i have XP and just got rid of a junky firewall, i have no router, i have utorrent 1.8.1 and AVG. i have this new error message that says: "unable to save the resume file. another program might have it open, or the the disk is full." i have a very large drive - so thats not the case. but i do use an external drive to store torrents and my laptop for the original exe. the only thing that deviates from this is that at one stage i did try 2 other torrent platforms and have been so far unable to get one off my system.

i saved a copy of the resume.dat in a temp file as i saw someone suggest in a thread, but i dont know for what purpose really.

are these threads in the right direction?

1 - http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=52398 one on copying and moving the resume.dat (which i did and now i cant find my original and maybe thats why ut is having a fit, i didnt cut i copied, when i tried to paste it back in the ut folder it said "no, folder is corrupted and unreadable" whata rude folder.

edit: scan this morning truncated several files inside and utorrent. i now have no torrents. please help.
