Port Forwarding Error

I have just installed uTorrent and set up the port forwarding to the best of my understanding, however I continue to get an error when testing the port. I am confused that the test shows a different ip address than what my ipconfig reports.

I am using a wireless router (set as DHCP server) and that is connected to a cable modem. I am using the DNS as reported in my router status but the uTorrent port forwarding test shows a different ip address that is the same address portforward.com site says is my external ip address. Which address should I be using for DNS? Is there a problem using my router as the DHCP server? Anything else?

Thank you for any suggestions you may have to correct my problem.

I am at work now so I can't get screen shots of my configuration at home, but here is what it was reporting:

ip config: IP 192.168.0.52 (range set at 0-51), subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.0.1, dns 68.116.46.115 and 68.116.46.70

When running test in uTorrent it reports that portforwarding not open on dns 68.186.61.226 portforwarding.com also reports my computer on this dns.

I don't know if that will help. I will send more information when I can.

Port Forwarding as set up in NetGear:

Service Name Utor1; Start Port 18978; End Port 18978; Server IP Address 192.168.0.52

ipconfig only shows you your internal IP address, the one from your router. It's not routable from the outside world. As far the outside world is concerned your IP address is the one on you public side of the router, which would be provided by your ISP. So your ISP owns 68.186.61.226 and that's where the world thinks you live. Your router converts that to 192.168.0.52 (or .51, or .22, or whatever your actually using internally) to get it to you. That's what NAT means. It turns your outside address to an inside address.

Think of it as an apartment complex. Everyone just mails things to 100 Sparrow Drive. Your landlord looks at 100 Sparrow Drive and the person it's addressed to and sticks it in the mailbox for #47. The outside world would never find you with just "#47", but inside your building that's you.

Is your uTorrent set to use port 18978?

Great explanation - thank you for your patience in explaining things.

In uTorrent listening port, the only thing checked is "add windows firewall exception" (I am actually using Panda firewall and have created an exception for uTorrent there too). The port shown is 18978.

What are the addresses 68.116.46.115 and 68.116.46.70 that are shown by ipconfig as DNS servers? Should I be using the 68.186.61.226 isp address somewhere in setting up port forwarding?

I don't know if this makes a difference - the internet port show a different IP address. I'm not sure if I should be using the settings from the internet port of from the LAN port.

NetGear router status:

Account Name WGR614v4

Firmware Version V5.0_07

Internet Port

MAC Address 00:09:5b:d7:b3:3d

IP Address 172.25.25.3

DHCP DHCP Client

IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Domain Name Server

68.116.46.115

68.116.46.70

LAN Port

MAC Address 00:09:5b:d7:b3:3c

IP Address 192.168.0.1

DHCP On

IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
