Is it possible to saturate Gigabit speeds on a WAN?

So, 1 gigabit comes out to 125MB. I notice even on my local hard drive using TeraCopy, I can usually achieve 50MB/s from local disk (non-RAID) to local disk (non-RAID). Granted, they are not Raptor 10k, but Gigabit speeds actually attainable on servers? If so, what kind of set up would you need? How many upload slots would you need? It seems like a lot of home broadband in USA can do about 2MB max unless they have fiber optic. Does it matter if your filesystem is Windows vs Linux for disk performance?
