thrawn562
Hi there, there seems to be a so far undiscovered or unacknowledged bug in at least in versions 1.7 – 1.8x of this software. On my Vista 64-bit system, uTorrent causes a permanent system freeze, with no blue-screen and a frozen (not black) display. Music stops playing as well. Only the use of uTorrent with an active download can cause this behavior, and a wide range of connection settings (in # of peers, upload rate, download rate) make no difference - it always crashes eventually after running 5 – 30 minutes, whether the system is being used or uTorrent is left minimized and unattended. It is also perfectly stable on the same system booted in to Vista 32-bit, where both installations of Vista are relatively fresh and running no antivirus or firewalls, and no UAC. The 64-bit system has proven stable under a range of taxing network applications, and only running of uTorrent causes any unpredictable behavior. My forum searches have revealed no acknowledgement of this behavior. Thanks for looking in to it.PS: Mai system specs:Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650Intel P45 Chipset8GB ramNvidia GTX 280 GraphicsEthernet connection to 20mbit down /5 up FIOS connection
sharkie002
VIsta 64 BitQuad Q8300Asus P45 BoardATI Radeon 4850I have the exact same problem. I just bought the above system, was delivered yesterday. One of the first downloads was UTorrent. Locked up 3 times yesterday. Could figure why, until this morning when I was downloading something, Locked 3 times in 10 minutes, with nothing else running but UTorrent. Is this a UTorrent thing or will I have this problem with other bit torrent appz...?

natronix
I seem to have this problem too but I have been able to get a little further in diagnosing this. First, it seems to be systemic to Vista x64. I have 4GB of RAM, but the problem I believe has to do with the filesystem. I have an NTFS 80GB HD that has about 60% free space. I have also identified this problem occurring with the Halite x64 torrent client but it is less forgiving in terms of crashing the system. The system never BSODs. Utorrent will on occasion say file system error. I am working on getting these messages again for the specific error code. The recommendation the error that utorrent gives says to just restart the torrent and I do and it continues for several hours until it again enters this zombie state which the others have also described which paralyzes the entire system and only recoverable via hard reboot. First I am noticing that the issue is filesystem related. It appears that it has to do with file fragmentation. I encountered this error when dealing with files greater than 2GB. So the files I had this occurring with are in the range of 4GB to 8GB. Yep, big single iso or mkv files. I noticed that after running the file through jkdefrag, it says the file is fragmented big time. I attempt to defrag that single file with jkdefrag and it won't defrag it (still learning all the commandline switches like force together etc), but I moved the file off to a network drive and then copied it back to my system and it seems to have gotten rid of the file fragments. If I then have a non-fragmented file, the torrent will complete, but it seems that if the file were not de-frag'd that I'd keep getting this error. This workaround that I am using seems to solve this issue so I am betting it has to do with the many fragments that huge download files seem to inevitably get in trouble with. I will try to get some messages out but once the system goes zombie you can not even execute a shutdown albeit the desktop appears active, no apps will launch. Task manager reports an idle system, no memory hogs, but you cannot start any new tasks or shutdown. I'm trying to get more info from other x64 systems to see how this is related to Vista x64 and its NTFS operations because as I mentioned, I get this problem in Halite as well but that is an x64 native app (utorrent is 32-bit); so I am suspecting some OS calls related to file fragments being the case and a deadlock on I/O subsystem...Good luck,- Natrone
dimitris71
My system freezes with utorrent also. Since I upgraded my motherboard, cpu and memory, vista 64 freezes randomly whenever I use utorrent.(fresh installation, done memtest+, etc )I don't get BSODs and error messages. It's been over a month now. I even contacted ASUS-support because I was thinking that this could be a faulty on-board network controller. ASUS also suggested that this problem must be software related. (utorrent)Any luck solving this yet?

Ultima
Can you try uninstalling Symantec's product to see if the problem persists? While you have it uninstalled, enable Windows firewall, and don't visit unknown websites or use unknown executables just to be sure you don't infect yourself in the interim. dimitris71
It is a good idea, I will uninstall it and try what you say, but this freezing with utorrent could happen within an hour, or after a week. If this is a Norton related problem, it could have started after an automatic update. In the meantime, maybe I should use Avast antivirus just to be partly safe.(by experience I don't trust any site at all)I was using free Avast 1 year ago with no software conflicts, but stopped using it when a virus wasn't detected and got infected.Either way, I will let you know if it is solved. Thanks! Ultima
Yeah, last I recall, avast didn't have a very strong scanning engine. If you need free but powerful, Avira's personal antivirus (http://www.free-av.com) should be fine -- its detection rates rival or surpass even the best for-pay antivirus softwares (like NOD32 or Kaspersky). tviljoen
I have had the same infuriarating problem on my new macbook pro running Vista X64 - windows freezing (normally within about 10 or so minutes of startup but also in the middle of a crytical process etc). I have disabled the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager and since then, the machine has not crashed once!

tshort63
It is not listed as one but these are by the same manufacturer and are RALink:Encore ENLWI-G-RLAM; ENPWI-G-RLAM ; ENHWI-ARG-RLAM. It is a really good performer for me: Encore PCI Adapter ENLWI-nOn the SuperAntispyware do you mean Super Add Blocker or TrendMicro? Thanks for your help :-)

tshort63
Yes, the CD had bad drivers but they have posted new drivers on the site for Win 2K/XP/Vista/Vista 64-bit and they seem to be working well on two computers for me.I'll dump add blocker and see what that does....Works now, turned on the windows service and deleted Super AdBlocker..... Artaxerxes02
Having the same issue, Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I'm beginning to suspect it's the RALink card's drivers. Temporary Solution for me was to just run on 2GB instead of 4GB. Both sticks (tested individually) passed 12 hours of memtest so I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with the RAM. No crashes as of late. And I've also heard the issues with RALink 64 bit drivers aren't anything new so that's why my suspicion lies there.
tshort63
Ugh, crashed again so turned off the windows manager. I updated the wireless card drivers via MS update and presto, card did not work so rolled them back to the last version. I can do without transparent windows....One note on the window manager desktop manager, change the start-up type from "Automatic" to "Manual" by right clicking on the service and selecting properties.New beta froze too :-(EDITED*************Well, nothing seems to work to stop the freezes so I am going back to bitcommet (scheduler does not work) for now.....EDITED2*************Well, BitCommet froze too BUT only when Firefox was also open. As long as I don't DL until FF is closed everything works fine.....crazy.....EDITED3*************Ok, for whatever reason IE8 and uTorrent play nicely. I do believe it is the ralink drivers but it is aggravated by other programs apparently. For now windows manager off and no firefox seem to be stable and not producing a conflict.EDITED4*************Apparently ralink has the latest drivers posted on their site for the ralink chipset (4/2/09 vs 8/23/08 on the Encore OEM site), find out the chipset for your wireless devie and try the latest ralink drivers direct from ralink. Will update my results after my DLs are over :-)http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Windows.htmlFinal Edit?!*************Ralink Versions 2.3.2 > V2.0.0 wireless drivers seems to be working very well, stable and no crashes. Will try turning on the Windows desktop service again. Thanks to all for the help! uTorrent rox...

Artaxerxes02
Update on my end. Had an old D-Link card lying around (an Atheros chipset) and switched the RT61 chipset card out. Been able to download and upload torrents with all 4GB of RAM in.... seems like it was the card. If it turns out I'm wrong, I'll be back.Sidenote: 2.1.3 drivers didn't resolve the issue for me on the RALink card.
