Download fine, no upload, peers not connecting

Hi, thanks for reading. I'm not a complete and total idiot. My setup hasn't changed much in the past years I've been using uTorrent. Port forwarding is set up manually, and tests show the port as accessible. My firewall (McAfee) has been configured properly and its logs show peer connections are accepted. I set speed and connection limits as per the conservative settings. Speedtests show my connection is fine. DHT is off. I tried both the latest stable version 1.8.2 and 1.8.3. beta.

I can download perfectly fine, easily making it to the max download speed I set. No problems there. I just can't upload one single torrent. The log shows two messages for every IP trying to connect:

"Disconnected: Is seed" or "Disconnect: No such torrent [########]"

Like so:

Actually, this one doesn't:

Can you upload existing torrents after becoming a seed?

Your ISP may be hostile to BitTorrent traffic and disrupting seeding.

I can't upload *anything*, whether I recently became a seed or a month ago. My ISP Xs4all isn't known to interfere in P2P traffic, AFAIK. Checking for throttling reveals no problems. peer.lazy-bitfield is "true".

Anyway, I may not have been clear: I've been perfectly capable of uploading at a constant speed for months now until some days ago.

ISPs can change and become hostile...many have in the last 2 years.

If torrents upload fine while downloading but suddenly stop once they become seeds, it's even more obvious.

Just to verify your settings aren't making the problem worse...what is the speed of your line and what settings are you using?

(PLEASE spell out units, too many posters confuse kilobits/second with KiloBYTES/second!)

Download: 6500kbits/sec, up 850kbits/sec (both can sometimes be up to 10% faster).

Settings:

Maximum upload: 75kbytes/sec.

Maximum download: 600kbytes/sec

Maximum connections total: 160

Maximum connections/torrent: 50

Maximum upload slots/torrent: 5

I use the planner to limit upload the download speed to 200kbytes/sec in the daytime because my family uses a LAN music streamer (Philips Streamium). With that limit the music plays back fine (it could probably be set higher), and the other way around the streamer has never influenced my speeds. It has been shut down all day anyway, so that can't be the problem.

EDIT: I checked, and uploading works as long the respective torrent is downloading, when it finishes it doesn't continue.

Yours is the most reasonable settings I've seen in awhile, even moreso given you're taking into account download max while others use the same internet connection.

But just like I mentioned...if upload completely stops when downloading completes, it's almost certainly the act of a hostile ISP...in this case Xs4all.

GOOGLE might turn something up on it...but don't tire yourself looking, most people wouldn't post somewhere on the internet if they even noticed. :(

Hm well AFAIK xs4all is probably the least likely ISP in the Netherlands to interfere with torrent traffic. Founded by hackers, they usually side with their subscribers when it comes to things like data retention and privacy-versus-government interest. I've never encountered any report of traffic shaping by them. In fact, several columns have been published over the years by (among others) "technical executive" (I don't know exactly how to translate the exact term used, this is a literal translation) Simon Hania and other high placed executives, taking a firm stand against any kind of traffic shaping or deep packet inspection.

Besides, this is a business DSL connection, I've got my own domain and they offer hosting, but also the option of hosting the server myself. Interfering with outgoing traffic doesn't make any sense in that case.

They do have a fair use policy, but first of all it's very liberal (we're talking well over 100Gb a month, because that's sometimes the amount of data uploaded or downloaded with uTorrent alone), and secondly, in their conditions they mention they won't slow the connection if you exceed the fair use policy, they just reserve the right to send you a higher bill, which has never happened to me or anyone else I know of.

I just can't figure it out. All the advanced settings restored to normal (I tweaked some minor, graphical things, but you may never know), the patch for Windows is installed, speed tests confirm my upload speed is normal, several router resets, full PC reboots etc...

Still, it's possible they interfere with the uploads, I just don't think it's likely. I might try reinstalling my client, or testing with another client to see whether I did screw something up software-wise or something like that.

Yeah but even then... I'm not using a standard port, (11xxx), and I also tried 51xxx (and changed all appropriate settings accordingly), and as I mentioned, standard torrent ports were checked and found not to be throttled. But of course I'm not 100% certain, I just think it's highly unlikely, although I can't think of any other possible explanation.

Thanks for taking time to answer at least.

I tried re-installing (yes, I removed the settings files manually). The network icon thingy is just switching from green to yellow, for short periods, although the port has been forwarded correctly, also according to port checkers. The stats show only one connection has been made.

Sometimes I get 1 connected leecher, with a minimal speed (4kbytes/sec average). Completely shutting down McAfee firewall makes no difference (which it shouldn't, the port allows both UDP and TCP and there's an exception for uTorrent in place, which has always been the case).

It's just doing this:

Perhaps, but it has never interfered with uTorrent before, although it's always possible an update screwed me over. Of all the firewalls I tried, I like it best, so first I'm just gonna try using uTorrent on a different computer without McAfee on the network first, to see what happens, and if that works fine, a different client here.

Be a shame though, I've grown accustomed to both uTorrent and McAfee.

Also, McAfee's logs show it doesn't block any connections on the port I use, otherwise I wouldn't get the error messages in uTorrents log. Disabling the firewall doesn't make a difference for uTorrent being connectible, and private trackers don't show me as firewalled. Ah well, I'll see what I find.
