jjwa
Hello there,uTorrent kills my network/internet connection, even without any torrent running. Even browsing the internet will often not work with uTorrent running, MSN messenger will regularly lose it's connection and have to reconnect, etcetera. The program itself will often say it's 'Not responding'. A few weeks ago uTorrent worked just fine. Downloading and uploading torrents actually works, but currently the speeds are very unstable (because of the nature of torrent, very hard to say if that unstability has anything to do with the problem). Background information (is there such thing as too much information?):- I have checked all the guides and FAQs- since nothing is running, it had nothing to do with disk cache (stats all report 0)- I changed my speed and connection settings to the recommended values (even tho the problem occurs when no torrents are actuve)- I uninstalled and re-installed uTorrent- because the problem still occured, I deleted the settings files manually and re-configured, fixed nothing.- I have not changed any hardware compared to when it worked- I do not think I have changed any hardware drivers compared to when it worked.- I run no 3rd firewalls, no virusscan software- the windows firewall is running, but has been set up to allow ALL traffic except for what I specifically block. (At the moment that is only a few really specific ip-adresses)- I am running windows Vista Ultimate 64-bits.- Status bar network light is green and reports 'Network OK'.- Speed guide portchecker reports no problems- Speed tests report good speeds (I have a connection with 100Mbit download and upload, so I don't often get the full speed, but that's because of the servers' limitations of course. I have seen speeds between 20Mbit and 80Mb often, both up and down.)- net.max_halfopen setting is on default. I read something about a lvllord fix, but that seemed to be for an issue with XP, not vista- I have no router or modem, I am connected directly to a local network.Below are a HijackThis log and a Process Explorer report:HijackThis log: (I could not find anything out of the ordinary, other than my uninstalled AVG leaving a non-functional trace here and there)Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 21:52:58 , on 21/4/2009Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Program Files (x86)\DU Meter\DUMeter.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools Lite\daemon.exeC:\Program Files\XFiMode_1.7_Build_22\XFiMode.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\FileZilla Server\FileZilla Server Interface.exeC:\Windows\SysWOW64\Ctxfihlp.exeC:\Windows\SysWOW64\CTXFISPI.EXEC:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\x86\SetPoint32.exeC:\Users\jjwa-admin\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exeC:\Users\jjwa-admin\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - dtjohnst
You said you used the recommended settings...which ones did you use?I have no router or modem, I am connected directly to a local networkThere's a router or modem somewhere connecting that local network to the internet. Have there been any chances made on that network since uTorrent last worked correctly?

jjwa
Indeed, those settings . I doubt they have a large effect in this case tho, since my problem does not seem to be related to speed or amount of connections at all.I am not aware of any changes to the network. I live on a university campus and am simply hooked up to the local network. So that's not the type of network they tend to make large changes to very often. Switeck
"- Speed tests report good speeds (I have a connection with 100Mbit download and upload, so I don't often get the full speed, but that's because of the servers' limitations of course. I have seen speeds between 20Mbit and 80Mb often, both up and down.)"I'd say don't use higher than 10 megabit/sec upload settings. And even that is probably WAY too much for your monthly bandwidth use if you're running uTorrent often. And extremely so during peak evening hours.Check that uTorrent can sustain upload speeds at the max you told it to use. If not, it's probably set too high!
jjwa
I mentioned the problem even occurs when no torrents are active at all. I do not undersrtand how a 10 megabit limit would fix anything? Also:I don't understand the reason for the limit? What does my montly bandwidth and peak evening hours have to do with it? I have also had uTorrent supply very high speed pretty well (between 40 and 80 megabits/second and not dropping below that). Why would the uTorrent software have a problem with certain speed? Switeck
I didn't catch where you said the problem even occurs when no torrents are active at all. My bad. You really need to research why HijackThis! is showing CRITICAL operating system files as (file missing)! Or if any of the BHO (Browser Helper Objects, often used by spyware) might be to blame for your problem. When you said you used "those settings" you didn't specify which of my speed chart you used.My speed suggestion of 10 megabit/sec upload settings was more in line with probable limitations of your college/university's networking...even if they don't mind you going faster, I can SAFELY bet they can't handle everyone doing that. Disk Overloads can start becoming a problem once hard drives fill up even if nothing else changes, if you're running 2+ MegaBYTES/sec down and/or up...especially if running more and more torrents at once. (This forces the hard drive to read/write all over.)
jjwa
1It looks like the file missing things are an incompatibility of HijackThis. I believe they are all removed or disabled things. So I guess it finds a reference but something is not complete. For some reason that gets blamed on system files. Because if I would miss all those files (RUNDLL, lsass, etcetera) I bet I would have a ton more problems.2I used the speed suggestion of 100 megabit/sec, but I could use those for 10. Like I said, I doubt it makes a difference. Also, on a network, it is NEVER the case that everybody uses the insane amount of bandwidth and connections it would cost to run a ton of torrents at 100MBit/sec up and down. Especially at the same time. The network here was built for 100Mbit speeds, so it should be able to handle that. It's made of decent hardware, not of Sweex stuff, hehe. Also, I have a strange day/night rhytm, so I tend to download after everybody has gone to bed, not at peak times .3About Disk Overloads, I generally keep between 40 and 100 gigabytes of space on the drive I use for torrents, and it's a fast 1TB drive. Still chance for disk overloads? All three things do not really seem to have any relation to my problem? Especially because 2 and 3 should not be relevant at moments I am not even downloading and/or uploading with torrents.
Switeck
Disk Overloads can be a problem with people who never download/upload faster than 500 KB/sec.(Often due to a windows crash which forces their hard drive/s into PIO mode.)Well, I do admit these probably aren't related to your problem...but any clue about this?:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
jjwa
No I can get just as much information out of that gibberish as you can. But it reports (no file). So whatever it was, it's not running, because it's gone, So it doesn't do anything. It's probably something left behind by software I had once installed. For example AVG could have had a 'webfile-scanning-thingy' associated to the browser, and AVG did not clean up nicely when I uninstalled it. Switeck
Sounds like as good a reason as any to do a system registry cleanup or reinstall.
UStarkehaus
This happens to me as well. The program works fine for a while but then the connection goes down. Getting it back is easy : unplug cable modem, ipconfig /release, replug cable modem, ipconfig /renew, voila. This happens even when there is no torrent loaded ... just the program running. No amount of changes to the upload / download settings prevents this from happening.Something about the program itself is causing the cable modem to crash.Vista 64Motorola Vonage adapterMotorola Cable ModemApple Airport Extreme

quanzaboy
Hey jjwa,So, did you ever manage to resolve your problem? I seem to have the same issue... about a week ago all of a sudden uTorrent speeds on all torrents dropped drastically from an average of 500-600Kb/s to no more than 60Kb/s even on very popular torrents. Just as that happened, the issue of uTorrent freezing all internet traffic has begun to manifest as well. Even if it's just downloading at 60Kb/s (and my connection max is ~640Kb/s), my internet connection will barely move, and opening any website takes forever, even though it should take a second considering uTorrent is barely taking up any of my BW.I've had uTorrent installed for months, and have not changed any setting in it, or anything at all having to do with my connection settings in general. Haven't installed any new software either. This just started to happen out of the blue for no apparent reason. Like I said before most all torrents would download on average at about 500-600Kb/s. Switeck
Maybe your software firewall, antivirus, or uTorrent itself got updated?...And uTorrent is then partially blocked/slowed by a software firewall.Connections creep can occur in uTorrent, due to running more and more torrents over time...resulting in more connections being active at once than in the past, triggering an overload/crash of something that didn't have problems before. jjwa
Hey quanzaboy,Nope, I never fixed it. I simply stopped using any torrents.
