Download Priority Queue

I realize, after reading about 50 pages of threads that something similar to this has been suggested, but I believe this is sufficiently different from the numerous repeated requests that have been made.

So my suggestion is this. I know that people have repeated requested a queue for file downloads and been rejected because it goes against the way bit torrent is supposed to work. However, uTorrent already provides a method to prioritize files, but this must be manually selected. Instead of having to manually make one file high priority as other files finish, would a queue of this system not be possible? Even if a file is listed as high priority this does not prevent other pieces from being sent which seems like a way of not breaking the way bit torrent works while accomplishing something pretty close to what apparently quite a few people wish.

If this is not possible or has been already suggested, I apologize as I could not find this specific implementation suggested in my search.

Cheers,

RI

No, that is not what I am suggesting. Rather than having files be downloaded in order, a queue with some at higher priorities may run while other files continue at normal priority. If one were so inclined they could do this with the way uTorrent is already designed, albeit with more human labor. Rather than have people complain they can't download things specifically in order I suggest using what is currently already available with the addition of a queue for high priority items so as not to break the protocol but allow something similar to what is suggested.

Right. You choose a (set of) files, to download in order. Basically that's what the system does now, except for, as you say, being configured at each torrent's properties. As long as you're not saying the files must be downloaded in order, which I feel is bad, I say, sure setup a configuration box similar to the one in the create torrent dialog where people say what files to not include, like desktop.ini, thumbs.db, or .DS_Store.

The idea itself wouldn't get smacked down. The implementation would have to be decided, then the interfacing to the Files tab would have to be created, then the UI would have to be made for it... and all this when there are longer-standing and higher-priority fixes.... hope springs eternal, just don't lose it. Happy weekend :D
