johnq22 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I have a westell 6100, with a netgear wgr614. I'm using an xbox 360, and downloading, need to upgrade. Any suggestions on a router with p2p file sharing capabilities. I find good routers, like the ASUS wgl500, possibly fonera 2, but no good router with a built in modem. Should I just keep the crappy westell and get a good router, or will it do no good. Also what causes port forwarding problem, router or modem? I just want the best router/modem combo, or all-in-one, whichever is best.
Ultima Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 I don't know about what modem+router combination units are good, though I do know that the Linksys WRT54GL is a good router. You can stick with the Westell 6100 and disable its routing capabilities to make port forwarding easier.
Firon Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 You can force the Westell to not act as a router. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20939329- You may need to get a PPPoE client or something to actually get internet to work, depending on your ISP. If it's standard PPPoA, just forcing Windows to renew the IP will probably suffice. You're best off having a separate modem and separate router.
