Windows 7, FireFox slow browsing with uTorrent

Recommended Posts

I've encountered this problem ever since I've become a uTorrent user (years ago). I very much enjoy uTorrent and have either lived with it or resolved it from some various methods. I've changed IP's a few times over the years, and computers as well as operating systems many times. However this latest occurrence has me just baffled.

I use Firefox and am running on Windows 7 RC 7077, with uTorrent version 1.8.2. The program itself works fine (given the weak number of seeders on these damn torrents) but almost completely disables any other activity requiring bandwith. Speaking of which I am on an ISP that provides me speeds of around 4000 - 5000 kb/s down and 700 or so kb/s up (hell even one of the DSL reports had me pegged for 18k down). My ISP does not throttle any of my connections per the link that was listed in one of the mod's signatures.

The following are some of the applicable changes I've made to uTorrent in an effort to correct this issue.

net.max_halfopen has been set to 4

bt.connect_speed has been set to 10

IP resolving has been disabled.

DHT for Network and new torrents has been disabled (along with Local Peer Discovery).

UPnP and NAT-PMP have both been disabled.

peer.resolve_country has not been changed and remains false.

Max number of connections has been changed to 100 Global connections, which is the same figure as max number of connected peers per torrent.

The max number of active torrents is 20, with 10 of those being active downloads.

bt.transp_disposition has been changed to 5.

Global download rate is limited to 250kb/s and the upload rate is 40kb/s.

If there is any other relevant information I should provide just let me know. Thanks in advance for your help, and thanks for making a great torrent program.

Ack, I think I need to update the troubleshooting checklist so that people don't get confused... bt.transp_disposition should only be set to 5 for µTorrent v1.8.3 and above. v1.8.2 users should leave it at 0.

Can you try lowering net.max_halfopen to 2 instead? Does it alleviate the problem (slightly) at all?

Alright thanks, I reset the bt.transp_disposition back to 0 and changed the net.max_halfopen to 2 instead. Neither of which had much of any discernible effect on the browsing. I reset most all of the settings again and attempted to tweak the upload speed which seems to have a larger impact on it.

However this could present an even bigger problem by severely impacting my ability to seed.

You install any security software/firewall/AV on that win7 ? Is there excess CPU usage?

Can you compare the displayed upload in Speed tab, with the Networking tab in Task Manager or any other network monitoring application. Is there a discrepancy? Once you figure out the difference, if you change Ctrl-P > Advanced > net.calc_overhead to TRUE does the problem persist.

Indeed, Cox seems to have caused some problems for other users, but I'm not sure it was causing entire Internet slowdowns for users :\

a) get HijackThis from trendsecure.com, run it, view the log, and post the contents here

B) get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop), then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here

In regards to a few other comments I've never actually had a problem with Cox in either the uTorrent side of things or the browsing of the internet (at least not one that I wasn't able to overcome). Furthermore two of the links I had followed from this site would confirm that Cox does little when it comes to torrent users and their use of bandwith.

Cox limits bittorrent traffic and shapes all traffic > 5p. At least in San Diego, CA.

I haven't done full-scale testing in Windows 7, but basic < 10 Mbit speeds seemed to work fine. The logfiles linked show Portrait Displays Pivot Software, staticcache.dat (which I don't recognize, can you find out the path, double clicking in the PE lower pane on the file should bring up its properties).

Are you using norman AV? If not, check out the normnfd.nls as well.

In further inspection I've also noticed that my uTorrent speeds have seemingly dropped all across the board. Be it the private trackers that I connect to, or the ones where we find shall we say less generous seeders. I did however replace my router only recently because I needed 4 more slots. This may have something to do with it...

Jewelisheaven Pivot is display software used with my monitor, why I keep I don't know (I don't use any of the features on it like rotating the display...). Staticcache.dat was located here: C:\Windows\Fonts\StaticCache.dat This would suggest a font, but why it's there I do not know. Norman I also do not recognize, it was located in C:\Windows\System32\normnfd.nls I have not loaded any AV software on this build.

While those few are puzzling, like I mentioned at the beginning I have my suspicions that it may be a fault with my router (which was a cheap purchase) so I'll have to do some digging around tomorrow for any information I may need to tweak on this TP-Link TL-R860 router.

  • 4 weeks later...

In your preference, check your global connections in the bandwidth area... mine is set to 2000(this depends if your router can take it) if it gets worse, set it at 400 to be in the safe area. For windows 7 i also found out another internet traffic reduction set in windows 7 itself... Go to My Computer ---> Uninstall or Change Programs ---> in that window find turn windows features on or off, click that ---> Uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"

This also made my latency in games better :)

Grrrr.... half asleep here... saw the global connections in your list.... o_O; my bad.. maybe the remote thingy will work for ya... -_-; zzzzzzz
