airbornemist6
Does anyone know what the best settings for power saving would be when running µTorrent or even if there's any type of power management settings that could enabled while running it? I would like to save as much power as possible, since I'm running it on a gaming rig which sucks power like no other. I know standby will kill my torrents, and spinning down hard disks barely saves anything in the first place, and that's only if they ACTUALLY spin down. So, I ask, does anyone have any ideas? I'm running Windows Vista SP2
Firon
Your HDDs aren't gonna spindown while using uTorrent. There really isn't much you can do. If using wifi, you can set it to maximum battery saving mode. Perhaps use the battery saving power profile.
airbornemist6
Well, yes I know they won't spin down while using µTorrent. That's why I know it won't work. But, turning off wifi might save me a watt or two, I might do that.
Firon
Is this a laptop or a desktop?
airbornemist6
Desktop, but I have a wifi module installed.
Firon
It's a lot harder to save power on a desktop. Buying a new high efficiency PSU is a great way to do that.
airbornemist6
I have a high efficiency PSU, the problem is all the power sucking hardware I have in my machine. Damn video cards. Although, on second thought, turning on hard drive idling would at least spin down my 3 other hard drives.
Lord Alderaan
Gfx card and CPU are usually the big users (exponentially more then HDs or USB devices) so:Use a Gfx card that scales it's power consumption.Don't run apps that consume lots of CPU cycles (i.e. don't run Distributed Computing projects).Still you can also save little bits of power if you:Unplug all (non-essential) USB devices.Turn off monitors using their power button. Switeck
Set your sceensaver to blank black screen.Have the video power down after 15-30 minutes of inactivity by the user....Then the video card usually goes into low power mode at that time.C: drive where Windows is installed will almost certainly not spin down. If uTorrent's settings is on a hard drive, it won't spin down either because uTorrent writes to its settings files once a minute.
airbornemist6
*sigh* As I thought, there's nothing else I can do other than what I'm already doing.
