Lethn Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Okay, I admit I am a newbie when it comes to hardware so please use simple language if you decide to tell me to do something complex I have had this freezing problem since yesterday and I have tried just about everything to narrow down what it is and I have come to the conclusion that it is either something to do with my drivers or the bittorrent clients themselves. . I have tried doing a completely clean install of Windows XP and having everything formatted. I uninstalled AVG-Free Edition which I regularly use to test whether it was that but the computer froze regardless. I tried updating my LAN chipset driver, I currently use Realtek RTL8168C/8111C. I attempted to disable the DHT on Utorrent, this stopped the crashing for a few seconds but the moment my torrent went to around 100kb/s the computer froze and I was forced to reset again. Everything else works absolutely fine, I can browse, I can start up software and play games it is only when I use a bittorrent client, not just Utorrent that I have problems. I have the windows firewall disabled as I use a router firewall and I have the ports properly opened so the Utorrent status is green, I have never had a problem based on this before. I downgraded my version of Firefox but that didn't fix it, I can browse absolutely fine and download stuff off HTTP sites normally, I could even download TF2 off steam normallyThe only drivers I haven't tried updating is my motherboard BIOS and I am a little wary of that, if you guys could point me in the right direction or have already figured out what is wrong just from what I've described either way is good. This issue has been ticking me off a lot now and I use bittorrent a lot so I want to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Switeck Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 1st link of my signature at the very bottom of last post tells how to include uTorrent's attached DLLs to Process Explorer's list. I figure there's a few non-Microsoft DLLs that *DON'T* need to be there that are crippling your computer.

Switeck Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 I guess there's no "easy" solution then. "O8 - Extra context menu item: Download Using &BitSpirit - C:\Program Files\BitSpirit\bsurl.htm"Is BitSpirit still installed on your computer?
Lethn Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Edit: Okay I've narrowed it down for some reason it seems to be ONE specific torrent that I am downloading from so far which causes these crashes and I have no idea why, but I am going to be avoiding it now, I can download other torrents absolutely fine now.
Switeck Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 You may need to do a scandisk on that drive...
Lethn Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Okay I believe I have isolated the problem, I recently bought a 1TB Western Digital 'Green' Drive and I believe THAT is the cause of my whole PC having problems Utorrent was actually working fine before I put it in and it is only when I was downloading large files and came to about 300kb/s in speed that it started to totally freeze. Once I unplugged the damned thing everything worked exactly like it did before I put it in, so I guess I'll be taking it back to the store and demanding my money back, the reason I came to this conclusion was because I remember it being mentioned green drives often have limits on their power usage etc. so I wouldn't be surprised if thats what was mucking my computer up when I attempted to download anything larger than a gig especially since now that I've taken it out its working like before.I also remember trying to run Sims 3 off it, it was noticeably slower and jerkier compared to the games on my other drives.
Switeck Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 If it's a USB2 drive, it could just be a faulty USB controller and not the hard drive's fault.
Lethn Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Its no USB2 drive, its SATA and the moment I unplugged it everything is now working correctly, I can return it just fine so no harm done at least just a bit of a pain in the ass really
