majax01
Hello,I have the following unchecked:Enable DHT NetworkEnable DHT for new torrentsEnable local peer discoveryEnable Peer exchange1/2 the people tell me to check these and the other 1/2 tell me to leave them unchecked. Security-wise, is it better to leave them unchecked? I generally only use Demonoid to get torrents.
DreadWingKnight
Security as in protected from anti-p2p groups? On or off, you're not any better or worse off.
Switeck
I only recommend disabling DHT and Local Peer Discovery in cases of not needing them OR cannot take advantage of them due to overloads/slow speeds.
majax01
Well, from what I heard DHT can leek personal information about a person. Is that untrue? If I use Demonoid exclusively then I see no reason to use peer exchange or DHT.
moogly
Demonoid indexes private torrents (DHT, LPD, PEX are off) and external torrents which can be from public trackers (with DHT, LPD and PEX on). There is no absolute law.
Switeck
DHT and Peer Exchange only works on public torrents. If a torrent is set up/flagged as a private torrent, DHT and Peer Exchange are disabled for that torrent. No personal information is "leaked" -- if anything, you're leaking FAR more personal information just connecting to a website. You in/using USA, Washington State, ComCast Cable ISP by any chance? majax01
yes but being on this forum or websites and DL/UL torrents is different.
DreadWingKnight
Any website you visit has the same capability to identify your location, regardless of your belief that it doesn't.The information is easily gathered based on your IP address. Switeck
While you're on a torrent, your ip is shared with the tracker which hands it out to almost anyone who connects to that tracker. In theory, you could COMPLETELY block those "hostile" ips from connecting to you...but they already *GOT* your ip from the tracker/s, so it's pretty much a lost cause. Even *IF* they connected to you, they wouldn't get the full list of information that a website gets about your computer and you when you connect to them...there's also NO cookies or scripts involved. majax01
Ok, so bottom line is that there is no harm in having the following checked:Enable DHT NetworkEnable DHT for new torrentsEnable local peer discoveryEnable Peer exchangeAlso, having these checked could only benefit my upload ratio with certain sites. Thanks for the information. Switeck
More or less correct.Do note that most websites that track upload ratio use private torrents only which disable DHT, LPD, and Peer Exchange...which ironically makes it MUCH harder to find peers to upload to!
