Tipop
I've been trying to download a specific torrent for a couple of weeks now. There are 23 seeds and 83 peers, yet not one will connect. At first I assumed it was a firewall issue, but then to test it I tried another torrent and it downloaded just fine. I've been sitting at 62% of a 14gig file for a week, without a single connection from any of the seeds or peers. Can anyone offer any suggestions? (Other than linking to the FAQ or the READ HERE FIRST messages, which I have already read).
Switeck
Is it a private torrent? Are you getting tracker error messages? Is windows getting 4226 error messages? How fast is your connection? What uTorrent settings are you trying (and failing!)?What software firewalls do you have?
Tipop
No, it's not Private as far as I know. I've never had to enter any passwords or anything like that before, and like I said I'm at 62% already. No error messages.Fast connection. "6M" is the rating according to AT&T... I've seen speeds over 650k per second, though that's rare.My settings are:Max upload rate: 40Global Download Rate Limiting: 200Global Max connections: 80Max # connected peers per torrent: 55Number of upload slots per torrent: 3I have no software firewall, just the one on the router, and I've made sure my port is open. Besides, as I said I'm still able to download OTHER torrents.
Switeck
Your settings seem ok...download limiting normally isn't even necessary. So like you said, it may just be that torrent. But what makes that torrent "special"?No seeds? Slow seed? Few peers? All the ips are from Singapore?
Tipop
I'm not sure. I was having no problem downloading before (though it was always slow.) It's got 25 seeders and 119 peers. The problem is that none of them ever connect to me anymore. It's really frustrating to get 62% and then utterly stop.
Switeck
Does uTorrent's logger tab/window or peers tab/window for that torrent show peers and seeds TRYING (and failing) to connect?
Tipop
Nothing in the Peers tab.In the Logger tab, I had nothing turned on, so I turned on all the Peer Traffic Logging just now, and I see an endless stream of:[2009-07-11 14:46:19] 95.116.6.5:55265: Connecting: source: TH[2009-07-11 14:47:46] 94.255.129.141:13225: [µTorrent/1.8.0.0 (0.0)]: Handshake completed[2009-07-11 14:47:53] 90.199.163.181:41896: Connecting: source: Tyada yada yada... lots of similar messages. Switeck
Seems your connections are getting killed in every way imaginable. ISP interference (disrupting/throttling) tends to be more predictable than that. You never get any incoming connections?
Tipop
Correct. I never connect to any peer or seeder. I've had it running for the last 48 hours, and I'm still sitting at 0 out of 28 seeders and 0 out of 92 peers.Obviously it wasn't doing this before, since I'm at 62%.Here's a more thorough list:[2009-07-11 17:03:27] 62.209.3.106:20376: Connecting: source: TH[2009-07-11 17:03:33] 78.60.224.227:14470: Disconnect: Peer error: offline (timed out)[2009-07-11 17:03:34] 76.217.189.99:32000: Connecting: source: H[2009-07-11 17:03:35] 60.234.236.214:30040: Disconnect: Peer error: offline (timed out)[2009-07-11 17:03:36] 76.217.189.99:32000: Connecting: source: H[2009-07-11 17:03:40] 74.127.239.30:44484: Disconnect: Peer error: offline (timed out)[2009-07-11 17:03:41] 24.151.76.130:38256: Disconnect: Peer error: offline (timed out)[2009-07-11 17:03:41] 118.175.64.87:27091: Connecting: source: TH[2009-07-11 17:03:42] 95.116.6.5:55265: Connecting: source: TH[2009-07-11 17:03:44] 118.172.31.174:27154: Disconnect: Peer error: offline (timed out)[2009-07-11 17:03:44] 118.175.64.87:27091: Disconnect: Peer error: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. Switeck
I mean something like this:[2008-10-04 14:06:20] Incoming connection from 98.169.xxx.xxx:xxxx[2008-10-04 14:06:20] 98.169.xxx.xxx:xxxx: [Mainline 5.0.9 (0.0)]: Handshake completed[2008-10-04 14:06:21] 98.169.xxx.xxx:xxxx: [Mainline 5.0.9 (100.0)]: Disconnect: Is seedI was seeding at the time, so a seed disconnecting after connecting to me is normal. Is windows getting any event 4226 errors?A software firewall blocking uTorrent (but I don't know WHY it would do that only on 1 torrent) is the best explanation I can think of for your results. Tipop
I got some "is seed" disconnects, too...[2009-07-11 22:46:17] 83.191.138.134:22089: [Azureus/4.2.0.2 (100.0)]: Disconnect: Is seedDoes that make any sense?
DreadWingKnight
Well, considering you're not supposed to keep connections to other seeds, I'd say it's normal for you to not be connecting to them if you're seeding.
Tipop
I hate to sound stupid, but I thought I was "seeding" if I'd completely downloaded the file already and was just sharing with others. Otherwise I'm a "peer".Sorry if I'm not getting the terminology right. I've never had a problem with uTorrent before, so I never had a need to learn any of the jargon. It just worked.
DreadWingKnight
Look at the status column. If it's showing "Seeding" then there's no reason for that torrent to have connections to other seeds.
Tipop
The status is "Downloading". I thought that was clear from the context of the whole thread. Did you read the thread, or just the most recent post? The file is at 62%. Despite the fact that there are plenty of seeders and peers, none of them connect. It's not a firewall issue, because *other* torrents are downloading just fine.Does anyone else have any suggestions?
DreadWingKnight
Did you skip files?Have you tried stopping all other torrents?
Tipop
No, I did not skip any files, though I set some of them on higher priority to get those files sooner. The rest were set on normal priority. While trying to troubleshoot this I set them all to normal priority, just in case that was causing the problem. For a week now I've had no other torrents running. I started a couple of other torrents running a few hours ago, mostly as a test to make sure everything was still working. Those torrents are working fine. DreadWingKnight
Have you tried removing and re-adding this specific torrent (without deleting the data)?
Tipop
I'll try that right now.Well, it's back to 62% again... no connections yet.
Switeck
So do you ever seeIncoming connection from x.x.x.x:yIn logger?
Tipop
Well, deleted the torrent (but not the data) and re-loaded it, as suggested. I watched for a little while and posted that nothing had changed, then went to bed. When I got up this morning, I was connected to 6 seeds and 20 peers, with a good speed going. So that was the problem all along! Thanks, DreadWingKnight, for your suggestion. Also thanks to Switeck for trying. I appreciate both of your efforts. Can either of you explain WHY that fixed it? What was wrong with the torrent?
Switeck
Did you edit the tracker list for that torrent in any way? (a messed-up tracker URL = useless)Was Peer Exchange, DHT, and/or Local Peer Discovery enabled when you you added the torrent back this time? (...possibly getting peer/seed ips from them)Your ISP may have done extreme BitTorrent disrupting and throttling till sometime in the night. It's a stretch, but that's exactly what happens with people on bad ISPs -- torrents only work at all in the wee hours of the night.
Tipop
I didn't edit anything, I'm sure. The DHT, Peer Exchange, and Local Peer Discovery are all turned on by default, so I'm assume they were before as well.As for the ISP... I don't know. It's been downloading continuously for the last day and a half now.I don't know what caused it, but I'm grateful for the help getting it fixed. Thanks guys!
