Cloudhurler
Hi all,In the peers list I often get "[FAKE] Bitspirit" or "FAKE Bitcomet", "Fake µtorrent" etc...What does the "fake" part mean ?Thanks
Inf
It means that the client is faking it's real identity and its not really µtorrent
Cloudhurler
Thanks for replying. But but but, what's the point to faking being another client ?Is it a way to hide your IP address or something like that ?
hofshi
some private trackers ban certain clients due to ratio reporting problems. Some clients try to bypass the banning by faking the client id.

Perriman33
I thought it was when the original client program had been changed or hacked by the user to their own purpose/ Usually to become more of a leech. But you're explanation seems more realistic! chaosblade
Basically is the program has to fake its client ID and mask as another client, It's probably doing alot of things badly and its use is blocked (banned) for that reason. There's no reason to fake your peerid unless you're trying to hide something bad ;]
osm0sis
Perriman, i believe you're also correct. it's both. either it spoofs or it cheats.
splintax
IIRC, the cheating clients (ie. those that were originally µTorrent but have been hacked not to respect the private flag, etc.) are NOT detectable as [FAKE] because their client ID is exactly the same as a real µTorrent's.However, other clients PRETENDING to be µTorrent are usually detectable. Archatos
Actually, there have been numerous cases now where I've seen genuine µTorrent 1.5 downloaded from here being detected as [FAKE]µTorrent/1500 by other µTorrent 1.5 clients. This is a bad issue for trackers who try to keep cheaters out, and should be fixed by the developers.
Ultima
Eh? What's a tracker have to do with it? They don't use the same detection algorithms as µTorrent anyway.
