µTorrent gets stuck updating tracker

Hi.

This has been happening for a few weeks now with 1.82 and now 1.83

I leave µTorrent working and it's uploading and downloading fine, full speeds no problem. If I come back to it I often find every torrent (over 100) saying it's 'updating' in the tracker tab. If I stop then restart them they stay stuck at updating.

I stop all the torrents, right click the icon in systray then 'exit' µTorrent but when I check Process Explorer it says µTorrent is still running. I have to kill that process before I can start µTorrent again, and it works fine again, uploading and downloading.

I've done a search here but the other person with this issue was running wine whereas I'm using XP Home SP3. Belkin router with upnp enabled and enabled in µTorrent. Comodo Firewall has an automatic rule for µTorrent, basically I allowed it and it works fine. There are no logs in either the firewall or router indicating an issue.

The light at the bottom of µTorrent goes red when it gets stuck updating but is green when working.

Other things that may or may not be relevant, Norton AV gaming edition and that's it on the security front.

µTorrent is set up as per guide instructions.

I don't think it's firewall or router related as µTorrent freezes completely and has to be killed in Process Explorer.

One other thing, it's a private tracker I use exclusively and I posted the issue in there and someone said they felt it happened more to SSL connections.

Nah, that's not worked. One by one they're all going the 'updating' route.

It's done it again tonight. (13/07) One by one every torrent goes into 'updating' mode and never comes out of it. Closing and exiting µTorrent the program is frozen somehow in the task manager. I can't open another instance of µTorrent until I end the first one in task manager or Process Explorer.

It's bizarre because one torrent was uploading while the others went into 'updating' mode from 'working' and ultimately it ends up with µTorrent not responding.

I saved the Process Explorer logs from when it was working fine and from when I had exited the program but it was still in Process Explorer as still running. They both look the same to me though.

Is there anything else I could do or that you could look at?

I tried that this morning and now (6 hours later) just checking µTorrent about 3 quarters of the torrents have gone 'updating', most are still green but a few have gone red (which they all will do eventually).

I'll take a look at what Process Explorer says and save the information and stick it in here in case it tells you anything.

I've been getting this problem for awhile as well now. Had it with both 1.8.2 and 1.8.3

Using Windows 7 64bit.

New torrents added once it starts all this won't start to download either obviously. Have to exit out and end the process in task manager as well.

I and an associated have both experienced this on Vista 64. Hard killing uTorrent and restarting it makes it go away temporarily. This problem is not present in Azureus, ABC, or BitTornado, so it's not a matter of bandwidth or OS limitations.

What mjr said. I'm temporarily using another client and I haven't seen this issue of being stuck on updating since I started using it about a week ago.

I'd much prefer to use µTorrent though so hopefully the cause can be found.

Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried resetting your settings to defaults and rebuilding them manually yet?

Except for 5 or so labels, my settings are the post-install defaults. Labels should have no bearing on tracker connections.

There is no reset to default. You have to completely obliterate your entire uTorrent data files (settings.dat/old). I've done this, without success. I've tested on older versions of uTorrent (1.6/1.7 worked fine). I've tested other clients (worked fine). I've tested an older version of the official bittorrent client (works fine, can't be assed to install the latest version).

As long as the OS is some version of Vista 64 and the uTorrent is version 1.8.2 or 1.8.3, the problem occurs. The state/age of the OS or uTorrent install/configuration has no effect on the problem. It shows up eventually. The frequency of the problem increases with the number of torrents which are not in a paused/stopped state.

I'm in the same boat here. Vista 64 bit (Ultimate) and µTorrent v. 1.8.3 (Build 15772). It'll run fine for maybe a day, then everything will get stuck on "Updating...". If I close the client, it looks like it shuts down fine. But if I try to restart it says there's another instance running. Sure enough, there it is in Process Explorer. I have to kill it there & *then* I can restart, at which point everything updates fine & runs like normal until the next "freeze" occurs...

I can post hijackthis & procex logs if you want. There's already a few here, so I left them out for now.
