µTorrent gets stuck updating tracker

OK, it happened when I got home from work tonight. All stuck updating. Created .dmp, compressed it, and sent it to you, Firon.

As an experiment, I tried the "fix" outlined in 3r1c's post. I changed net.max_halfopen from 8 to 1000. And waddaya know - everything immediately updated & went back to normal right away. (all 709 torrents) Currently maxing out my upload again. :]

Yeah, I tried increasing the max_halfopen too - set it to 64 and haven't experienced the "updating" bug since then (when I check the statistics window there are never more than 20 or so, usually less than 10). Hopefully it's a clue for you, guys.

Your connection's barely "fit" to run SEVEN active torrents at once!

Trying to run 700+ is almost certainly causing the severe choking you're seeing.

You have very little upload speed to split between 50+ peers. (...assuming 1/10th of those torrents are active with 1 peer each.)

What other settings are outside what's specified in 1st and 2nd links in my signature?

...Because they are probably aggravating your problem further.

If you're going to raise net.max_halfopen ...test with bt.connect_speed LOWERED from attempting up to 20 new outgoing connections per second down to about 4. I have a hunch this is probably triggering the problem due to some obscure weakness remaining in networking...or a bug in uTorrent.

Just to note, we've gotten several of the dumps (thanks guys) and are looking into the bug. Hopefully we can fix it ASAP.

Has anyone seen this issue on XP x64, or is it only Windows Vista/7 x64?

Upgraded to 1.8.4 and it now seems to be doing it a lot more frequently. I have to restart uTorrent multiple times per day.

happens to me also. windows 7 x64

Chaging net.max_halfopen also fixes the problem for me, but causes instability in other internet programs.

[edit] now it seems to have worsened and i can barely browse the internet or stay connected to aim for more than a few minutes with utorrent running with net.max_halfopen at default 8

[edit2] i setup a windows xp home edition virtual machine and ran utorrent. it seemed to be working for awhile but now after coming back home at the end of the day all my torrents are stuck in the updating tracker mode again along with utorrent needing a end process

same problem here

half-open connections just keep increasing and once they hit max_halfopen number everything hangs on updating. increasing max_halfopen doesn't help, just take a little longer to fill them.

spent some time on that yesterday and i believe one of the trackers im using is *ucked and sending false data to my client. any way to force utorrent to release half open connection after xx seconds?

Is it possible, that the problem is SSL-related? Huge chunk of my torrents is using SSL-trackers only (and I pretty much can't change it, since the non-ssl versions are unbearably unresponsive, not sure why) and I get some serious half-open connections stacks too (right now uT shows 49, even tough in TCPview there are only like 10 connections made by uT whatsoever...).

yes.

though it says 2 half-open connections are queued, i don't know why they're queued. i've increased the number of allowed half-open connections to a huge number (>1000).

this problem only appeared after an upgrade from 1.8.3. all of my trackers are affected regardless of SSL.

if you need a memory dump just tell me how.

I had the same problem (all freezing in updating; not exiting properly forced kill was needed), and yes, for me it was at least the same frequency with 1.8.4 (so I got back to 1.8.3).

I use XP Home 5.1 (build: 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234).

I had this problem again this time, and I used "3r1c"-s workaround. Everything works fine for the time being. Just before that I run process explorer (see at the end).

I've been using utorrent for ages now, for private trackers exclusively, https and http mixed, and no new network setting or anti-virus software, etc. Nothing new really. Did not try other client, though, like others did in this forum.

One of ssl-trackers I use just went offline and I had a "comeback" of the problem - number of half-open connections skyrocketed and my uTorrent got stuck (it was set to 100, to avoid high numbers). When I increased it to 1000, the number kept growing till it got to almost 500.

Seems it really could be an SSL-related bug.

Same problem here for the last two weeks now.

I've been uninstalling and re-installing 5 different version of µTorrent trying to fix the bug without any luck at fixing this. I have tried 1.8.2, 1.8.3, 1.8.4, 1.9.? and 2.0 beta (16126 and 16222 built). This leads me to believe that the problem is not µTorrent based. The bug has to be caused by some windows updates back in middle august, any version of windows. I run vista sp2. Everything went fine before the last two weeks and was even running µTorrent 1.9. The only bug it had then was toolbar icon would not all load together. That bug disappeared after a vista up-date(don't see why that would have help) but soon realized that µTorrent kept on updating trackers. It runs Torrent 1.8.4 now but any other version would have been fine I'm sure.

Before finding this post, I was starting to think the problem could be caused by my ISP.

Knowing, if OS other than windows based OS are having this bug or not, would help pin-point the problem;)

Update; 7-9-2009,

Thinking that my ISP had done whatever to its service when I could not get any response from some tracker, I installed Deluge (leaving all µTorrent folders unrelated to Deluge) to see if the same would happen and everything was fine. But when restarting µTorrent, it could not locate any of its torrent. After deleting both of the resume.dat and resume.dat.old and reassigning all of my torrents uploads, everything went back to normal. µTorrent finally got its tracking response update as it should without being stuck updating as it was doing for the last two weeks.

Now, having to reassigning some 50 torrents uploads is not the solution. Even though it worked, I don't wanna do that kind of fixing that way again, but would really like to know why this has work.

The real question could be; what was in those "resume" files that made utorrent updating its tracker constantly non-stop? Or could this simply be an error made by windows saving/restart between its updates?

Anyway, now it's working ok;)

Trying different versions of the same program is hardly an evidence of it's innocence. If you ran into this problem using different application, that's a whole different story.

Of course the problem is a very strange combination of events, just as any other bug.

One more thing - does the recent update address the problem in any way, or is it completely unrelated?
