Name change? µTorrent --> nanoTorrent?

Ok, I just found out that ludde owns nanoTorrent.com (uses it to redirect searches from the search bar I believe).

I know everyone loves the name µTorrent.

But think about it, do you love the name really? or do you love the app itself? Do you love the name enough to stick with it even if it may harm it's popularity in some way?

I know with me it's the app... I'm not overly bothered what it's called it just kicks ass and does it's job so well.

Here's my thinking... µ is hard for the average person to type, say and understand. Sure it may be cool that it's Greek for micro but getting into the realms of something more brandable and easy to digest I propose that the name changes to nanoTorrent.

It's not too late to make this transition, there is already confusion between µ and u (the domain name for starters only hinders this) ... and nano sums up µTorrent just as well, if not better than the current name.

Easier to say, easy to write, perhaps easy to remember... AND easy to make a logo for which is something that we have had a few troubles with.

What do you guys say? :)

Guys, if you'd read my post more carefully you'd see I'm not just talking about the way it's written. I'm talking about the way it's read, written, said and generally understood.

Don't be afraid of the idea of change, keep your mind open is all I'm saying :)

If people think typing µ is hard, then BitTorrent is not for them. :/

It's not quite that easy on a laptop. I usually copy/paste it from the "µTorrent Community" heading at the top. :P But I definitely want µTorrent to remain µTorrent. It's just plain cool. :D

well, people either say utorrent, mutorrent or microtorrent. I personally say utorrent :P

µTorrent is known as µTorrent for 4 months now and µTorrent is still new and

I think it would hurt the spread of news about µTorrent because of confusion of the names.

There is a reason why like companies doesn't change names even thought they would want to.

Agreed. Just look at how much BS Firefox had to endure before they finally settled on a name. Phoenix (the city went bananas), Firebird (database crew almost caused a DDoS attack on the forums) and then finally Firefox. It's a PITA to go through a name change, especially when an app is already well-known. IMHO of course. :/

uTorrent is just fine.

well, technically it's µTorrent. ;)

See... kinda proves there is some confusion, with some users.

Would be nice to unify the name under something more solid and easy to pin down for everyone. For the good of the app, in the long run.

Never said it would be easy, but basically redirect all traffic to nanoTorrent.com and change all references to nano, announce the change, then give it about 3 to 4 months and things will be moving right along, the new name will eventually become second nature. It could potentially be done.

Remember most people are in love with the app itself and what it does for us, rather than the name itself.

Just because something would be difficult doesn't mean you shouldn't contemplate it, and consider the options, and the benefits.

@Shrill: As far as the name change, I'd prefer it to stay the same, or possibly change to literally uTorrent (not µ). People would see it like "you torrent" which would kind of make sense. But really I like it how it is, confusing or not. Not that my opinion matters much, but I'm just saying lol :P

@1c3d0g: So how does the city Phoenix claim that "Phoenix" is copyrighted by them, unless they are all birds that rise from the ashes of their previously burned bodies. I mean, talk about "prior art." Crazy stuff...

Well I think its easy just to type u dont you think? no?

I'm sure 99.9% of uTorrent users know that uTorrent = µTorrent

lol

I'll agree with that, ares. something else had to of happened; a city can't copyright a name like phoenix, that's been around for as long as it has.

we should test this. rename µTorrent to Phoenix, and see if the city sends letters to ludde..it'd be thepiratebay all over! :D

WTF are you guys talking about?

The Phoenix name survived until April 14, 2003, when it changed due to trademark issues with the BIOS manufacturer, Phoenix Technologies (who produce a BIOS-based browser called Phoenix FirstWare Connect).

Get your facts straight. :D

And, actually I agree with the name change. Right now, µTorrent has only reached a fairly small percentage of the people that it could potentially reach. It isn't too late to change names, and yes, Firefox did endure SOME problems while name changing. But wait just a sec. This is Firefox we are talking about; it's popularity spans far wider than µTorrent, not that there should be any comparisons between them. But what I'm saying is that, if Firefox at least managed to change names twice and still become as popular as it has right now, then µTorrent can, too.

The name µTorrent will be crazy once and if it reaches the masses. People will DEFINITELY be calling it 'uTorrent' everywhere, and pronouncing it like that, too (you-tor-rent). Probably only 5% of the people will actually pronounce it right - just show the name to people you know and ask them how they'd pronounce it, and I ain't talking about your regular BitTorrent user or techie, either.

Also, if searching for µTorrent on some websites, then it doesn't bring up the uTorrent that some people type. So technically, µTorrent is known under 2 different names, which is, µTorrent and uTorrent. So on some forums, for instance, when searching, we'd have to search for both to look for all the threads regarding it. Something else to think about.

Just my 2 cents.

*sigh* ..........

.....why? There is nothing wrong with the name the way it is............key being nothing wrong, yeah its different but people will catch up to it.......unless trying to find out how to do something new is too overwhelming. If the program is that good it dosent matter what you call it but it aint broke I say and it dosent need to be 'fixed'.

I agree with DonGato... nanoTorrent just doesn't sound very catchy. lol maybe it's just because I'm already used to saying/thinking utorrent in my head... Even though people are confused about how to pronounce it, it shouldn't be a reason to change it. Just the "µ" symbol alone looks unique and cool =P

Either way, it's up to ludde, and I'll follow anyhow.

Gary King pretty much understands where I'm coming from here, I share a lot of his views.

Regarding the name NanoTorrent, I didn't choose it. Ludde (the creator of µTorrent) owns NanoTorrent.com - he must have bought it for a reason, although probably not to change names... but who knows? I was merely suggesting the possibility of changing names.

As far as NanoTorrent not being catchy... well perhaps not, but it's not that bad really... I could see myself just shorting it to "nano". :)
