utorrent won't download, I am using Norton and XP.

After the torrent is added to the download list, it initially shows as a blue box with a white arrow. After a few seconds it changes to a red box with a white arrow, shows 0 seeds and 0 peers, 0.00% Done and 0.000 Avail. I left my laptop on for over five hours and none of the torrents showed any change in the percentage of download. Before installing Norton onto my laptop the torrents were downloading. I don't know my connection speed. I am using XP. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

Already uninstalled Norton and reinstalled uTorrent and still doesn't download. I follwed the instructions as seen below and found my speed and follwed the instrucions for entering that into uTorrent. I then checked my port and this said 'An error has occurred!' This is the only reason I can think of for why i is not downloading, but I'm sure you know more than I do about downloading.

At http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/connection-setup I clicked on http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

I am at Malaysia and clicked on 'Show 384 speedtest sites ordered by location' and used http://www.speed.jaring.my/index.html and the next window has a message saying:

'Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error' and the next window won't load.

I went back and clicked on the other two web addresses listed http://202.188.95.52:8080/speedometer/ and http://direct.tm.net.my/xpeedometer/xpeedometer.htm after clicking on them it says 'The web page cannot be found'.

I went back to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?more=1 and clicked on 'Test speed to Los Angeles, CA, USA' and again the message 'Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error'. After clicking OK the next window is blank so I clicked on 'Instructions (click if you are having problems)' and then clicked on 'Verify your Java version'. Again the message 'Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error'. After clicking OK the message 'Java Version verification applet: Your browser does not support Java, so nothing is displayed'. I clicked on 'Majorgeeks.com hosts the MS JVM uninstaller' and this installed Registry Mechanic which scanned my system but to fix the found problems it required a license key and this I don't know.

I went back to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?test=1 and clicked on 'javatester.org' and again the message 'Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error'. After clicking OK it seems 'Troubleshooting: If you don't see a pink rectangle above, Java may not be installed' is correct. Scrolling down to 'Method 4: Internet Explorer Options' I followed the instructions for 'Advanced Options Tab' and "Java (Sun)" is installed. At this point 'If a version of Sun's Java is installed, then do: Tools => Sun Java Console.' I did this and again the message 'Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process caused an error' and after clicking OK nothing happens.

I went back to http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/connection-setup and clicked on http://www.abeltronica.com/PagRec/uk/01/ and this page did not work.

I went back to http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/connection-setup and clicked on http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/u_load.php and clicked on http://www.testmy.net/ul-97 and it said:

"Not the fastest broadband, but it's broadband... Your connection scored 1.5/5 stars." (test again)

Diagnosis ^info^: Looks Great : 3.29 % faster than the average for host (220.206)

This was tested from a 386 kB file and took 20.11 seconds to complete.

Ok, so I know my speed.

After setting my speed from following the instructions on http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/connection-setup

Setting µTorrent for your speed

1. Go to Options > Speed Guide

2. Select the listing closest to your upload speed result (rounding down as necessary)

3. Higher settings will not give you better speed, and may in fact make download speeds worse. Too low of an upload speed will give the same result. So don't try to be greedy.

4. Click the "Use Selected Settings" button at the bottom of the Speed guide window.

and finding a download with many seeds it still does not download, on the uTorrent window it shows a download box which is red with a white downward pointing arrow and all of the fields are 0.

This was the same before I uninstalled Norton and installed Avira AntiVir Personal and before I uninstalled u Torrent and reinstalled uTorrent.

I went back to:

Options > Speed Guide

Test if port is forwarded properly.

The next window says:

An error has occurred!

Port 33048 does not appear to be open.

I clicked on http://www.portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Utor/Utorindex.htm and clicked on https://secure.portforward.com/store/pfconfig.cgi and for this it said I need to buy something.

uTorrent worked before, it is only at this location that it doesn't. It seems that it is something to do with the port so if anybody can assist it will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Rich

  • 2 weeks later...

after running the speed test:

'You uploaded at: 19 kB/s'

So which setting do I enter under:

> Options

> Speed Guide

> Connection Type

as this is categorised under k and Mbit.

Even after entering a connection speed it doesn't download so after I tried the port and clicked:

Options > Speed Guide

Test if port is forwarded properly.

The answer is:

'An error has occurred!

Port 33048 does not appear to be open.'

I changed the port clicking Random Port and ran the test again but the answer is still:

'An error has occurred!

Port 58041 does not appear to be open.'

So I assuming the problem is with the port.

Can you assist with the port and if the speed is enetered correctly.

Many thanks.

Rich

Hi

The speed guide is measured in 28.8k, 56k, 64k, 96k, 128k, 192k, 256k, 384k, 512k, 640k, 768k, 1Mbit, 2Mbit, 10Mbit, 20Mbit, 40Mbit, 50Mbit, 100Mbit so which one do I select for:

Your connection is: 157 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps

You uploaded at: 19 kB/s

or as you mentioned '17 KB/sec or lower upload settings'.

Also, do you have any more ideas about the message:

'An error has occurred!

Port 33048 does not appear to be open.'

Many thanks again for your reply.

There is no field for 160kbit/sec in the speed guide, the two nearest are 128k and 192k. Does the k mean the same as kbit/sec? If so, do i choose the higher than 160k or lower?

I tried it with both 128k and 192k and the torrent is still not downloading and shows a red box with a white arrow pointing down and 0 peers and all other fields as a 0.

The status reads [F] Downloading but all the other fields are at 0 and the box at the start of the torrent on the left is red with a white arrow and when I click on the torrent the 'Availability' bar at the bottom of the window is a long red strip with 'Downloaded' above at 0.00%.

When you mention 'offending torrent', tey are all offending as there are around thirty in the queue and none of them will download and all have the same status, same 0 entry for all fields and the same red box with a white arrow. I left my computer on for a few days to see if any download progress was made but it was still 0.00% for all the torrents.

I have used uTorrent and Bitcomet before on this computer and the downloads were fine, thus not being able to understand why they now will not download.

Don't know how to copy and paste that to show you it but the majority of the fields under status read 'connection closed by peer', one reads 'offline (timed out), above that reads 'waiting for announce...', above that two fields read 'working', the seeds, peers, and downloaded tabs are all at 0. Is this the tab you meant? Don't loose patience, I really am not adept at the intricacies of this, I only knew it worked before.

Thanks.

It's the same as the other torrents, 0 peers and all fields zero, red box with white downward arrow, 'Availability' a red bar and the status is also the same, with the fields under status reading 'connection closed by peer', one reads 'offline (timed out), above that reads 'waiting for announce...', above that two fields read 'working', the seeds, peers, and downloaded tabs are all at 0.

I am still wondering why whe I click 'Test if port is forwarded properly' under Options and Speed Guide the answer is:

'An error has occurred!

Port 33048 does not appear to be open.'

Do you think it is anything to do with this.

Not to jump the gun though, I will listen to your suggestions and follow your thread, I appreciate your assistance.

To go back a bit and to make sure the right connection speed is entered, which k or Mbit should I be using for a speed which was tested at:

Your connection is: 157 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps

You uploaded at: 19 kB/s

Been thinking about doing that...but I don't know how. I am using Avira Antivir Personal. When this first occurred I had just moved into my new apartment, it seems that it won't download here which makes me think it's a port error, but I don't truly understand what this means either. I removed Norton and installed Avira, when I did this I was at a friend's computer shop. I then took my laptop to a WiFi hotspot and connected to the internet there with Avira installed and running. uTorrent was downloading fine, it was when I got back to my apartment and ran utorrent that the same problem occurred with no downloading progress at all.

Any suggestions with regards to this.
