michkol
The default port in uTorrent is 32459. Please change the next version of uTorrent to use a random port by default, on first startup. It's a bad thing if everyone uses the same port, because ISPs can throttle it.There is no point in encryption, if all peers use the same port. ICleolion
Yeah tbh µTorrent should choose a port by random on first startup, but the option to randomise port should be off by default.
Stone
I fully agree with that
ICleolion
Especially with the new webUI coming up some people are gonna be turning off random port anyway.
tjobo
Actually, I don't think ISP throttles program specfic ports. It's one thing to trottle protocol-specific ports. Why would an ISP's throttle a special port just for µTorrent, when it's so easy to change? It won't be worth the effort for them. If they throttle µTorrent they will also have to throttle the default port for Bitcomet, Azereus, ABC, Bitornardo, Mainline etc.. 32459 is random enough. But hey, it's shouldn't be hard to had add the "Random-button" on TheFirstStartupFunction{}
Stone
Well at least now we can see which users are too lame to change µT port
Animorc
I can't think of any bad things about randomizing the port the first time µTorrent is started.
Falcon4
The first time, yes. But on every startup would either require VERY reliable uPnP mapping, or a DMZ (bad).µTorrent should also tell users what port to map on their router (if need be manually) on first startup, because its port is completely random as it is (to the BT world, whose default is 6881)!A random port on first startup would be a great idea. It's completely irrelevant already, so what'd be the harm?
Pocky888
i would prefer random port from a range of ports set by usersdifferent port for each torrent added from the range would be great, for user like me who run server and never restart utorrent unless neccessary (update, reboot ....)
Falcon4
^ Different port per torrent would be difficult considering all torrents only use one port - there's no need to assign a different port to each torrent!
Ultima
What are the advantages to using multiple ports? And what does being a server and never restarting have to do with the number of ports? O.o
Firon
Using multiple ports for torrents is worthless, it's just a waste of ports, and more effort to forward them.
Ultima
Heh I was hoping Pocky888 could respond to justify his need for it (I personally agree, it's worthless).

sgibbers17
Having a range of ports to chose randomly would work great for me because my roomate also uses utorrent and I would like my port to change randomly. This way we could split the ports between us and no worry about having a port randomly going into the wrong range.
osm0sis
i've always thought range would be nice also, especially since some trackers don't allow anything below 49152. edit: but yes, this request has been asked to death. one earlier today even. lets try to stay on topic. NiteShdw
Wouldn't it be easier to just have uTorrent come up with a 'first time configuration' dialog that would allow the user to change the port and other basic settings the first time they run uTorrent? Ultima
@NiteShdw: Speed Guide automatically pops up for new users starting from µTorrent v1.4 =PIt still doesn't change the fact that people generally leave it with default configuration, and don't bother changing ports if they don't know what it does. Random on first start is easy, IMO, and might help in case ISPs decide to catch on and ban/throttle port 32459... though I'd venture a guess and say that it probably won't be happening any time soon. Nefarious
why not?
splintax
Yep, great idea since the current port is "random" anyway, but allocated to all µTorrents.Especially with the new webUI coming up some people are gonna be turning off random port anyway. There's a difference between the Random Port button (picks a random port) and the Randomize port on startup option. No reason I can see for people to use the default port when using the WebUI.
Ultima
@Nefarious: Because new features aren't going to be added for the stable version... unless this is considered a "change" rather than a new feature ;P
michkol
Is there any chance of adding this? Almost all clients (BitTornado, Azureus, BitComet, BitSpirit) use random ports on new installations.
smackhero
I'd like to be able to set the range of ports since my router allows me to specify a range of ports to be forwarded for each service.
Ultima
Yeah that's already been acknowledged in Firon's list of prospective features that ludde should add.
