Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Hey, I've been searching the forums and didn't find any solution to the problem. Actually I have two.The first one is, that after installing uTorrent and copying old settings over the new ones in %appdata%\uTorrent uTorrent.exe starts the installation process again instead of running the application itself. Then I tried copying old settings where uTorrent is installed and it worked. At least until I've closed uTorrent when it gave me a warning that said "unable to save the resume file" which gave me an option to retry (which doesn't work) or cancel.I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 today.
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Did you re-do the security settings on these folders?
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 No, didn't know that I had to. What exactly do I have to do?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Properties on the folder, security tab, edit, give your username full control and apply it to all child objects.
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 and the program files\utorrent folder?
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 It's a little different here. I don't know why my username isn't there:Should I give full control to CREATOR OWNER?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Remove settings.dat from both locations then re-place the settings.dat in %appdata%\utorrent
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 I don't know how, but it works now. How come that the settings are still there if I deleted them and replaced them with blank ones?Nevertheless I would still like that the files would be only in %appdata% and not in two places. And which ones are being used now?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 The settings.dat file next to the utorrent exe gets priority, then %appdata%\utorrent if the one next to the exe doesn't exist.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Yeah, I know that. But if I delete the one in the program folder and then try to run uTorrent it gives me the setup wizard again.
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Then uncheck the "Install uTorrent" option and FINISH the wizard.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Ok, it works only to give me another error/problem. Now torrents wont load. I get the following error: "Error: Can't open .torrent file: torrents\example.iso"
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 .iso files aren't torrents.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Whoops, my bad. It's like this:
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Remove and re-add the torrent, following the migration guide.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 I thought so. Was trying to avoid just that because I have more than 300 torrents and it takes a long time to get back on track. Any explanation why this happened and I was not able to migrate normally?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Paths changed (even ever so slightly) to break the ability to do this migration.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Paths to the settings I presume?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 paths to the local copy of the .torrent files actually.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Oh, so that's the thing that I can change in the preferences under directories? If so, nothing changed and the folder is the same as before (and even the same as in previous OS) when everything worked. This error only occurred when I deleted the settings files in the program folder and copied them in the %appdata%\utorrent folder. I would think that nothing actually changed (only the path to the settings files) so why is there a problem?
DreadWingKnight Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Because the resume.dat file stored the location of the .torrent files, and that location changed.
Pegart Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 No, it didn't. .torrent files are in the exact same place as before. "C:\Program Files (x86)\uTorrent\Torrenti". This path has never changed.
