General Speed Issue.

So I've read and done everything here: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992

"Try testing a torrent from OpenOffice.org, Slackware Linux, or Ubuntu Linux? (If any of them run quickly, then the problems you're experiencing likely lie only with the swarm)"

Downloading one of these torrents did in fact yield the download speeds I want. But I don't understand what "If any of them run quickly, then the problems you're experiencing likely lie only with the swarm" means really.

I know what the swarm is, it's all the other users connected to me that have the tracker and are attempting to download the same file or have it downloaded already right?

What I don't get is, how come the Slackware Linux torrent has 66 seeds in the swarm and I'm connected to only seven of them and I get 700 kbps. Then I get a torrent from Pirate Bay with 954 seeds and I'm connected to 35 of them and I get 20.0 - 50.0 kbps.

And this is with almost everything I try to download. Is something wrong? Or is it just the torrents I'm getting?

I know next-to-nothing about your line, nor the peers/seeds you connected to on the torrents you've tried. But I can guess well enough...the Slackware Linux torrent had seed boxes running on 100 mbit/sec or even 1 gbit/sec upload lines. I seriously doubt your other torrents have that...

Thanks guys for your replys.

Switeck on your first link I've gone over everything on that list. Funny thing is I went back to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest to run another test and I was getting 3 Mbps on one server in San Fransisco (closest to me) and then 7 Mbps from one in Chicago. Is that normal???

This is what I got from testmy.net which didn't ask me to pick a server so maybe this one is more accurate.

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::

Download Connection is:: 7374 Kbps about 7.37 Mbps (tested with 12288 kB)

Download Speed is:: 900 kB/s

Upload Connection is:: 231 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)

Upload Speed is:: 28 kB/s

Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Main)

Test Time:: 2009/09/26 - 6:02am

D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-8GXCKA2SP

U-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-SR3AGQEF5

User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) [!]

So I went to your Conservative Settings Chart and checked my settings to your chart. I only changed one setting and after applying it, 5 minutes later I'm still only going at 20 kB/s.

Any other ideas?

Got this screen about 5 minutes after I posted last time. It wouldn't let me double post.

BadSpeeds2.jpg

Had a weird spike and now it's back down to 20 kB/s and lower.

Under Trackers it says http://tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce status is "connection closed by peer". Could this be anything?

Also if my line is crippled what can I do about that? What makes you think it's crippled too? I'm pretty sure my ISP stated that my upload speed was only around 256k.

Sorry for not providing info, I just wasn't sure what information you needed.

I'll list a few things that are related, let me know if you need anything else.

- Preferences - Bandwidth -

Maximum upload rate (kB/s) (Automatic off): 20

Maximum download rate (kB/s): 0 (unlimited)

Global maximum number of connections: 55

Maximum number of connected peers per torrent: 35

Number of upload spots per torrent: 3

- Preferences - Queueing -

Maximum number of active torrents (upload or download): 2

Maximum number of active downloads: 1

Seed while [default values] Ratio is <= 150% or seeding time is: <= (min): 0

My computer is a custom built running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Can't think of anything else to add now, let me know if you need anything else if you haven't given up on me. :(

Those settings are not to blame for your problems, they are low enough to be ok on all but the most unstable of networking. They are likewise GOOD enough that download speeds should still be at least as high as upload speed on anything other than dead torrents.

Maybe it's your ISP? Methods of throttling and disruption can be convoluted enough to not trip Glasnost's detection but still give you bad results.
