small_noddy` Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 I am running µTorrent v.1.8.2 (build 15123) on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Previously, I had a connection of 256 kbps (1:2). That means I used to get a actual throughput of 25-27 kB/s for downloads and 5-7 kB/s for uploads for all throughout 24 hrs.Recently I upgraded my connection to 512 kbps (1:2). Arithmetically, I should get a throughput of approx. 52-54 kB/s for downloads and 15-16 kB/s for uploads. I have set my upload limit to 16 kB/s.But during day time I get a throughput of only 24-25 kB/s and NOT 50-54 kB/s for downloads and for the night time I get a download speed of approx. 50-54 kB/s but my upload speed stays constant at approx. 16 kB/s for all 24 hrs (daytime and nighttime). My ISP is saying that there is no ceiling set for download speed during the daytime and nighttime separately for my connection and that the connection bandwidth is the same for 24 hrs. Kindly help as to why do I download at a lesser speed during the day time.
Switeck Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 BitTorrent may be throttled during the day even if "normal" downloading is not.Read this:http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=58714(NOTE: Those settings were a special case for a wireless ISP!)
small_noddy` Posted October 2, 2009 Author Report Posted October 2, 2009 Thanks Switeck for your prompt reply.I went through some of the links your provided and on that basis as a starting point (of what little I understood) I have disabled UPnP port mapping, disabled NAT-PMP port mapping and also disabled resolve ip's. Let's see how it responds. I will keep you updated. Can I know in simple words what actually is UPnP and NAT-PMP ?I also did not get this statement "BitTorrent may be throttled during the day even if "normal" downloading is not". - Can you just explain in a little more detail.Sorry for the trouble and my "very little knowledge" about utorrents. Kindly reply at the earliest. And again, thanks for your prompt reply.
Switeck Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 UPnP and NAT-PMP attempt to automatically port forward routers (and modems that need it) and also autoconfigure software firewalls. Often they simply fail...or worse cause conflicts.Your ISP can have monitoring equipment that can spot some/most BitTorrent traffic and throttle or even completely disrupt what they find. This means even if regular downloading from a website using Internet Explorer may work fine...while BitTorrent/uTorrent won't download >5 KB/sec.
