kahoona Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I know this is probably a stupid question but speeds and their abbreviations are confusing to me even after 15 years of file sharing. My question is- dslreports.com tells me I get 5647Kb/s (exact quote) down. Given a properly set up Utorrent under ideal conditions what should the D: section at the bottom of the Utorrent page read (ex-676.8kB/s). I am simply looking for a benchmark so that I know how I am doing and wether I need to tweak or not. ThanksKahoona
DreadWingKnight Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 most speedtest sites measure in *bit/secuTorrent displays in *byte/secYou're getting at least 95% of your connection's rated speed.
Switeck Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Just being connected to a seed or peer costs bandwidth even if they're not sending or receiving pieces of the torrent.Constantly trying and retrying seed/peer connections also costs bandwidth.Even at best, getting 95% of your connection's rated speed is extremely good.Your upload speed max is probably only about 25-100 KiloBYTES/second, depending on whether you pay huge amounts extra for the "premium" (but still painfully slow upload) service. On torrents with few seeds, your download speed is often around the same as your upload speed.
kahoona Posted October 14, 2009 Author Report Posted October 14, 2009 Thanks guys. So I got it as good as I will get it with this ISP. That's what I needed to know. I get about 118kb/s up but I hold it to 100 even. I'm happy with that!Kahoona
