Hi! First off let me say I love utorrent! I've been using it forever, and its a great featherweight client, I'll never go back to Azureus! Although the frog was nice....

Anyways, i am having a problem with utorrent crashing when i restart/shutdown/log off my computer. I have never ever before had any problems with utorrent, and this quite frankly has me a bit confused. I've used it on multiple systems with no problems whatsoever, and on this system before, with the same OS...so something must be different.

I just recently about a week ago, reformatted and installed a fresh copy of XP media center edition on my system, along with the new Ubuntu! very cool! and today i remembered that i forgot to put utorrent on here....so i go ahead and do that, i downloaded your latest stable release... 1.8.5...and i encountered this issue, here is basically what i get when i restart/shutdown/log off with utorrent still running in the background;

first i get an error message from one of these processes;

drwtsn32.exe

dwwin.exe

dw20.exe

dumprep.exe

and they almost all say the message below

application failed to initialize because window station is shutting down

then i get the utorrent crashbox (I didnt know there was one! first time I've seen it!) where you can send the dump or not...

and then i get the standard windows 'program not responding' error. I've seen those for certain things before when restarting, but never this consistently.

Recently i have installed all of the updates for my system from windows update...i suppose its possible that perhaps something i installed from the 'optional' area of update might have screwed with something...i dont know. I today i installed their .net framework 3.5 service pack 1 as well so that might be something to consider as well.

Has anyone experienced this before? Mods, do you know of an easy fix? any troubleshooting?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. If i close utorrent completely and THEN restart my computer, i still get one of the error messages from that list of processes, usually from dumprep.exe. I've tried to find some concrete info on these things, but i don't seem to be able to find anything linked to utorrent.

Wow, quick reply! You're either up late, or very early, or your time zone is way out there!

Just so you know, before i made this thread, i thought to solve my problem by uninstalling utorrent, and then installing an earlier version of utorrent, thinking that perhaps the newer version was the culprit. At first i had installed the latest stable 1.8.5, then i tried 1.8.2, same deal, and then i tried the new 2.0 beta, all with pretty much the same result.

I only once clicked on the dump button as my computer was shutting down and the message popped up, and frankly im surprised the dmp file was there in utorrent's folder, but just for conciseness, i figured i should restart, see if it happens again, and try to make a new dmp file for the version that i obtained the log files for...

Interestingly enough, this last restart gives me no error messages at all, i saved the logs, kept utorrent running, and then restarted. Nothing....very weird and strange and Norse god of mischievous if you ask me. In any case here is a link to the dmp file, and below are my logs, perhaps if what happened before happens again, this will help in determining the issue.

I looked at the dump that seems to come from uT 1.8.2 – 15296

The crash seems to be caused by a 3rd party product that created a global hook that hooks the Windows messaging processing.

Could you please try and uninstall RocketDock and see if it resolves the issue?

Well, after a long search for the cause of the problem, uninstalling many things and reinstalling many other things, running utorrent and shutting down...i still came up with the same issues.

Then, i remembered one small change i made to my system. I discovered something called the nvidia desktop manager. I never had it before, it must have been bundled with one of the newer drivers for my card. I noticed there was a utitlity in it under effects to make the taskbar transparent. I turned it on and had a transparent taskbar cool! At one point i noticed an error message in my search that made me think about it. Unfortunately i can't remember the process specifically that popped up, as it might be helpful in avoiding this in the future.

Anyways, not a huge loss considering, i disabled that function, and then disabled the whole thing, and now, no error messages, and everything runs smoothly. Moogly, this may well be what you are pointing out in your last message, but i cant be sure. Heres a pic of that desktop manager.

P.S. I am still running rocketdock and truetransparency, and no issues.

Brilliant! I was having the same problems (with drwtsn32.exe, dwwin.exe, dw20.exe and dumprep.exe reporting "application failed to initialize because window station is shutting down") with disabling NVidia nView Desktop Manager did the trick for me as well. Thanks guys, thanks Google and thanks uTorrent for a brilliant product and forums that solve problems that aren't even theirs! ;]

Edit: my problem occurred on XP Pro SP3, not MCE - not terrifically important, I guess, but just in case somebody else searches for this issue based on those criteria.

Could have been a conflict between nvidia desktop manager and true transparency. I was always running into problems with those two when I was back on xp. They both try to act as window managers and often I would lose title bars on all my windows.
